Cut a long story short, the brake lever snapped. I still rode home, keeping a very long distance from the car in front, all was fine.

So I know its very risky (which is why I took a quiet route home at a sensible speed) but if I was to get pulled over would I be in trouble? Was i breaking the law?

exact thing happened to, just use back roads and try not to draw attention to yourself. Use your gears to engine break. The officer will prolly give u a vehicle rectification notice.

Obviously you can't be expected to magically fix it in the middle of nowhere.
You really should do it before using again though.
Stoppping distance will be shocking and also you may get into difficulties with hill starts!

Hi

Think that would come under the specific offence of Driving With Faulty Brakes (not sure of the exact title).

Probably quite a nasty one to get done for.

All the best

A very small stump was left, but it was totally unuseable.
I won't need the bike for a couple of days, new levers on its way so I won't be endangering mine or anyones elses lives. Cheers for replies Thumbs Up

If they were in a bad mood or a traffic copper they could probably do you under construction and use regulations or for driving a vehicle that is unroadworthy.

In real life, any reasonable, 'normal' copper who saw you were carefully limping it home would tell you somthing like "Well take it canny and don't let me see it on the road again 'till you have it fixed.". It would be nice to think they would offer to follow you home to see you safely off the road, but I doubt it.

I think Stinkwheel got it.
Q...Would the bike pass the MOT with one brake ?
A...Not a chance.

I think you are legally required to have TWO braking systems. Bikes have a front and rear, cars have the foot brake and a hand brake.

Why?

Is the back brake broken as well?

Personally I always use the back on a hill start, easier than juggling throttle and front while maintaining biting point and having a good look over the shoulder.

You would be screwed if you had to do an emergency stop though.

Mine snapped when i drop my 400 outside my mates house, luckily he had a zxr clutch lever, i turned it upside down and it fitted perfect. Laughing

Of course. be pretty pointless carrying it otherwise.
I used to do a bit of trail riding and for that I carried spare clutch & brake levers, plus I had spare cables, inner tubes & a host of other stuff bable tied to the bike.
Be prepared... Very Happy
