Here's a few bits about the Honda NSR 125 R as quite a few people have started asking questions

The Bike In General:

The only problem i have had is with the battery, which turned out to be the previous owner lying, saying the battery was new when in fact it was 3 years old.

After that being changed i have had no problems, you get about 120 miles before you have to change to reserve tank for your fuel, so fuel consumption is good, costs about 8-9 quid to fill it up.

Maintenence is a bit fiddly if you don't know what you are doing, fairings need to be looked after, screws can strip, my advice would be to get a Pro-Bolt set for it.

The original indicators are huge, you need to get a set of micro ones for it, make sure they are the long stem ones though, you will also need a new indicator relay, these cost about 8 quid.

The riding position is good, not too strenuous on the wrists for going round town so a benefit, also comfortable for me and i'm 6 foot 2"

The bike weighs about 135kg dry weight, a benefit if you intend on getting a bigger bike as you will get used to the weight earlier, the bike also looks like a big bike compared to its replacement the CBR 125.

As its a 2 stroke bike you will need to be willing to splash out on fully synthetic oil, like Castroll TTS this costs about 12 quid a litre, this is essential to keep the engine from seizing.

Services are about every 2500 miles, at the 7500 or 10000 mile service you should consider a full engine rebuild, i would not push it later than this as you will be risking a lot. the rebuild will cost about 500 - 600 quid

Thats probably the general bits covered

As For Performance:

Restricted the bike will top out at about 75-80 mph
It will do 0-60 in about 12 seconds, this will only happen if you warm the bike up properly.

Derestricted it is a different story, the bike will top out at about 105 mph and do 0-60 in about 6-7 seconds, again only if you warm it up properly.

Derestricting:

To derestrict there are several factors involved this is the one i hop you get stuck with as its the easiest to get out of.

1) GET A UK SPEC BIKE
2) The restrictions are in the exhaust and the fuel inlet manifold, to remove these look at the instructions on www.nsr125.com
3) These are extras you will need to get alains swears by them and he has been tuning NSR's for years.

Carbon Fibre Reeds
New Jets For the Carb

I hope this helps people any feedback or extras added on are more than welcome

All the best

I'd say the engine will last longer than 7500 miles. Mines done 17000 and still going strong, and i've seen higher, i reckon they're good for 20k.

Also:
Honda, so easy to obtain parts, also reliable

Cool any other extras just add them, this should help new buyers of NSR's out a lot.

Cheers for the extra info Chiz

My old 2001 NSR125 was dynoed at 23.7bhp.
https://www.bigccracing.com/shootout-gallery.asp?ID=136

I very much doubt that you can get 105mph, I think realistically you'd be lucky to get a true 100mph.

Also if your planning to buy one bear in mind that it costs quite a bit in 2 stroke oil to run it.

Mt NSR was clocked at 103 by my mates brand new Bandit 650, not red-lining either, so i reckon 105-110 is obtainable.

Chiz, it's very common for even new bikes to have inaccurate speedometers especially above 70mph.

I have a Police calibrated speedometer on my bike if you want to check how accurate your top speed is,
or you could visit your local drag strip (probably much more fun).

RE: Parts
I bought a pair of flexi-stem indicators from:
https://www.vehicle-wiring-products.co.uk/VWPweb2000/mcycle-1/mcycle-1.html
Ref: INDUFLOV £14.59 pair

They worked very well and from what I remember they didn't need a relay installed to work.

Demon Tweaks? Only if you want to buy tarty bits like small mirrors or mini indicators. Not a bad site though, but my bike came with a load of there products and havve since fell apart (the bits that were glued on have now fell off).

Isnt 135kg heavy for a 125? I had the idea from somewhere that most where about 120kg?

It only cost me 160ish quid to do a top end rebuild on my NSR (parts from David Silver). Its not a really hard job to do if you're happy with a spanner. It took me less than a day start to finish. Feel free to PM me if anyone fancies doing this for any advice, walk-throughs etc. I could try and do a walk-through in a post if anyone's interested... Thumbs Up

Hi everyone,

Sorry to bring up an old thread, no point starting a new one.

When you say it needs alot of oil...how much are we talking??

I'm trying to work out how efficient the NSR is, as I'm hoping to get one for my commute to Uni next year.

EDIT: Also, I'm only 5ft 5 and about 9 stone. Will I manage the NSR do you think? I'm not exactly weak, but don't have long legs!

Cheers

You will be fine at that height and weight. They are pretty small physically, and not that heavy Thumbs Up

The engine will go a lot further than most people imagine if correctly looked after.

Also, the best tyres for it are:
Bridgestone Battlax BT45's

And don't use a Denso plug, they are rubbish. Stick to NGK, mines being changed back soon. Plus the Denso one was £7.50!!!
i though it'd be good but it's not.

If you want replacement mirrors, order the CBR900 ones from Demon Tweeks. They're exactly the same.

*Edit* Almost, exactly the same, you wouldn't notice by looking at them but they are at a slightly different angle and the plastic is a bit thinner. Maybe just because they're pattern, not genuine Honda though.
