No No No, not me (Touch Wood)
My mate has a cg125 copy, that was hit by a car, their insurance took full blame and the bike went to the workshop.
They rang him today and told him it was a "writeoff" due to the expense of replica parts and labour.
He now wants to get the bike home, repair it himself, and then get it back on the road.
I was just wondering what do you have to do, to be able to say your bike is roadworthy again, after a writeoff?
Is it just a simple MOT?
(Im unsure what category of writeoff it will be classed as either, does that affect how to get it back on the road?)

Afaik he need to buy it from the insurance company, some do not sell them back.
If it's a D it can go back on the road, if it's a C it needs to be examined by someone from the department.

Category A - Must be crushed. All of it.
Category B - Vehicle may not be returned to road. Parts may be sold.
Category C - Repairable. Possibly structural damage. Cost of damage (at dealer prices and labour rates) is more than book value of vehicle.
Category D - Repairable. Probably non-structural damage. May have been economic to repair, but insurer doesn't want to.
Category A - May not be resold. Must be crushed. Total burnout or flood damage (salt or foul water). Severely damaged with no serviceable parts, or already stripped out shell. DVLA require "Notification of Destruction".
Category B - May not be resold. Damaged beyond economical repair, usually with severe structural damage. DVLA require "Notification of Destruction". Parts can be removed and sold.
Category C - Repairable salvage. Usually applies to vehicles with significant (structural) damage, where cost of repairs exceeds book value. Can be sold for repair but must now have VIC inspection before returning to the road. Recorded as "Category C" at DVLA. Category C vehicles' V5 documents are returned to DVLA. You re-apply for registration on the original identity once the VIC inspection has been done. VIC inspection and re-registration removes the Category C classification, but evidence it was at one time Category C remains on the vehicle's record at DVLA (and HPI and AA and the others).
VIC inspection - Straight from VOSA's web site "[The VIC] will involve comparing the vehicle presented against information held by DVLA, such as the vehicle identification number, make, model, colour and engine number. The VIC will also compare the record of previous accident damage with evidence of damage repair as well as checking other components to confirm the age and identity of the vehicle."
Officially, the VIC does not check roadworthiness. If any significant defects are present, they can prevent it being used, but it is not a check of vehicle condition or roadworthiness. VIC tets centres in major towns, list on VOSA's site. It costs £35 (early 2005).
Category D - Repairable salvage. Minimal damage, probably not structural, but insurer does not want to repair, even though it might be economic to do so. Often stolen and recovered after claim has been paid. Or for unusual models or grey imports where the difficulty of obtaining new parts hinders a quick repair. Does not need VIC inspection to return to road. Recorded with HPI, AA, and the like. ____________________ the undemocratically unelected mod of the Scottish section |

If the garage says it's a write off and too expensive to repair just write it off and get a payout.
You'd spend more money fixing the bike than you would buying a second hand cg. ____________________ Go back to bed - You have no rights - "Streetfighters ~ Mainstream motorcycling's crackwhore sister." |

IIRC, a Category C motorcycle write-off does not require a VIC, as motorcycles don't tend to get sold as ringers but broken for parts. The Vehicle Identity Check for cars is really there to make sure that the car is actually what the V5 says it should be in terms of engine and chassis numbers, rather than being a stolen car with the numbers of a written off vehicle. It also checks to compare the recorded crash damage with what is present and makes sure that repairs have been undertaken.
The government's motorcycling strategy document lays out their approach to the VIC for motorcycles.
| The Government's Motorcycling Strategy wrote: | Vehicle Identification Check
7.8 A further issue raised by the AGM
was that consideration should be given
to extending the Vehicle Identity Check
(VIC) to include motorcycles. The VIC
was introduced in April 2003. It is one of
a series of measures, under the Vehicle
Crime Act 2001, designed to help reduce
the level of vehicle theft. The VIC scheme
ensures that seriously damaged vehicles
have their identity checked by VOSA
engineers before a vehicle is allowed
back on the road. It is also a consumer
protection measure, as the VIC scheme is
a valuable tool for reducing the incidence
of “ringing” (giving stolen vehicles a fresh
identity). However, it is not clear that this
particular aspect of vehicle crime is a
problem for motorcycles. Current evidence
suggests that motorcycles are stolen for
the sale of parts, rather than “ringing”.
Whilst we are happy to keep the issue
under review, we have no plans at present
to extend the VIC scheme to motorcycles. |
