Hey people,

Just want to get some advise on somthing about my new RS.

Well this morning i was commuting to work but hadnt put petrol n my bike for a little while, as i wanted to see how many kilometres i could get out of a full tank.

So at 126 Kilometres with petrol tap On the bike cuts out. So i say to myself good now i know where not to take the bike to in kilometres. I also thought to myself what a shite petrol consumption. But it does have a larger carb than standard.

So i put that tap onto reserve and went to the petrol station and filled up. The previous owner used to put Shell Optimax into it but that Shell garage isnt to convenient for me to travel to. So i put some normal unleaded fuel in it.

But my problem is that when i put unleaded petrol into it, its started to run a bit shiter than it did.

Aditional information was that it was a realy realy cold day.

Is it essential that i stick to using the same make and form of fuel as the previous owner?

Hi

Not really. However it depends on the model of RS. Earlier ones were set up to run on higher octane fuel and running these (without playing with the ignition timing) on normal unleaded could result in burning a hole in a piston.

By the way, that is a really pathetic fuel range. OK my early (34mm carb) RS125 does not have a reserve (just a warning light) will easily do a lot more than that (looking back around 200km is not unusual, with a very best of 287km (running in some rings I think).

It is possible that running on reserve you have sucked some rubbish in from the bottom of the tank (especially if it has not been run on reserve for a while), blocking the fuel filter in the carb.

That could be the case of having a load of crap at the bottom of the tank. I tried to flush it out by running it hard every so often but all it was doing was filling the air with tons of smoke and fumes.

Is there a way of flushing out all the crap from the bottom of the tank another way. Should i try a new air filter or anything. Ive ben thinking of one of those K&N Filters i think it is. How much are they and from where can i get them?

I commute around 25 miles a day i think and if i fill that tank up with £9 a day of fuel im not getting much out of it untill i need to re-fill the bugger again Crying or Very sad

Any advice on how to get this sorted would be great. Wink

Only way to get crud out of the tank is to take it off and empty it then wash it.
If you have blocked your carbs and fuel filter then you will have to replace the fuel filter and clean the carbs.

Don't bother with a K&N, you will have to get it re-jetted to suit.

Where is my fuel filter located? Is there no way of cleaning this out aswell as the carb. Maybe with WD40.

They only cost £1.50 odd so is it really worth it? I'm not sure where it is exactly on a RS but just follow the fuel line from the tank and it should be along there somewhere. Thumbs Up

Hi

As above on cleaning the tank out.

The 34mm carb that (I think) you have fitted has a filter inside. A gauze tube a bit bigger than a cigerette filter. Turn the petrol off. Look at where the fuel pipe joins the carb and just below that there is a brass bolt (~13mm head I think, but that is vague memory). Undo this bolt and you will find the fuel filter.

I will try the cleaning out my tank thing tomorrow in day light. How do i exactly clean this. Empty all petrol and then what? Pour wanter through it?

I know where you are now about the Fuel Filter.

Hi

Avoid putting water in the tank (water is one of the main things that causes problems going onto reserve). Drain the tank into a large container. The rubbish will sink to the bottom. You can use some of this petrol to flush the tank through again. Then carefully decant the fuel out of the large container just leaving the rubbish at the bottom.

This is the remains from the fuel tank on Charlottes GPZ. The stuff at the top is petrol, the stuff at the bottom is water, and there was a fair amount of rubbish floating around in it.

Either take the fuel tap off or whack it on reserve and shake it all out into a container, then as Kickstart says flush t thorugh again with some more petrol just to try and make sure you get rid of any leftovers. Thumbs Up

hi, my 01 rs 125 does around 129km before you have to put it on reserve.

there are also fuel filters in the tank, if you take the tank off and undo the bolts where the fuel tap is, take it out and you will see two filters, one for "on" and one for "reserve".

wow, i must be luckey or something but i got 200 odd out of my tank, im assuming it kilometers, although i do put in bp ultima unleaded and run around 1 gear higher than i should.
