The only thing that I like about the bad weather is that I don't have too many bikers getting in my way on the motorway.
Yesterday was a nice dry day so it seemed that every man and his dog decided to take the bike to work. That didn't really affect me on the way into work but on the way home it really gripped my sh*t.
If any of you use the M62 at rush hour you'll know that its gridlock - Miles and miles of stationary traffic. I'm on my bike - no problem. I can filter through the traffic quickly and get on my way. Yesterday I came across seven bikers that annoyed the sh*t out of me. Why do they insist on trying to filter when they're clearly incapable. I'm not joking, I could have walked faster than they were riding. Its not even as if the traffice was moving. There was absolutley nothing in their way.
Even when these idiots knew that I wanted to get past they refused to move out of my way. I think that they cannot accept that they aren't the best riders in the world and that someone else may be a little quicker than them.
As a result of them being awkward I had to force my way past which isn't a thing I like doing because its not very nice.
FFS they'd be quicker on a pushbike Evil or Very Mad

Sorry about that. Rant over Wink

I know exactly what you mean in the morning i would usually have to filter down the M25 and i usually have a pillion as we are both at the same uni and even with a pillion so many other bikers are in the way.

When a faster bike comes up behind me il let him by as with a pillion i am not as quick as i can be, why doesnt everyone do this i dont know.

I also make it known that i want to get by and still there they are at walking pace and the lanes are so wide you could run faster.

Because they are boring accountant types of economic bikes trying to put theory into practice, but are so shit up by the horror stories they HAVE to go at a safe speed, ie 15 odd mph.

The funny thing is, if anything did happen to them, theyd bin the bike whatever because they are usually that incapable of riding.

Bless em.

Although the one thing i can sympathise with them with, is when im filtering with good progress (Whistle) i dont check my mirrors more then to check they arent gonna clip anything. Now my version of good progress is about 50 more then anyone else is doing, at least.

So im concentrating. If i was bimbling at 15 mph down the middle i tend to spend an equal time checking the mirrors.

The scary thing is, to some people, 15 mph above traffic seems as breakneck and skillful as 50 plus, so maybe they are just 100% focused on the path ahead and havent seen you?

I suppose they might not have seen me at first but after a load of revving and flashing of my lights they have should noticed. I didn't just ride straight up their arses and start abusing them to get out of my way. I gave them a fair chance to move.
I think your right about them being boring accountant types. They were all on the latest kit but couldn't ride for sh@t. Just probably makes em feel more of masculine being on a bike they can't ride.

I've had this a few times, being the rider on both sides of the story and it got me thinking:

When I was the guy in front: I couldn't figure out if the guy behind if they wanted to go faster (i.e. in front) or were happy just tailing me, he was quite a bit behind.

When I was the guy behind: I would of been happy to go faster but was fine just staying where I was. On the occasions where I wanted to pass I would slide into the alternative lane and filter using that one.

Did you signal to the guys in front that you wanted to pass (although I'm not to sure how you'd do this)?

I'm not to sure how you could, maybe we could think of something?

Im not quick at filtering, to be honest i dont want to be, I never filterd on a motorway so this is obviously different but when im filtering on normal roads ill just take it easy, as soon as I see a bike behind me ill let him by but u gota rember its hard to see directly behind u as thats where the bike filtering behind u will be.

They where probably just taking it easy incase a car decides to do a stupid move ant pull out on them, even lough this risk is pretty small if ur filtering on a motorway with stand still traffic.

Did u try present urself to them? like keep more to there right so they can see u in there mirror or somthing? I know thats probably pretty much impossible if ur filtering donwn the middle with double file traffic.

To be honest you sound far more inconsiderate than these riders you are harassing. Why are you in such as rush that you need to be riding at 30 through stationary traffic; leave five minutes earlier and you'll be able to ride at the same speed as all these other 'inconsiderate' riders.

Why does a rider not noticing you make them inconsiderate? We all make mistakes now and again.

Last night I was filtering along the North Circular - it was pretty bad - 5 miles solid/slow moving from Hanger Lane to the M1 - travelling at anything over 30mph between two lines of stationery traffic is IMHO very dangerous on this road as people tend to 'dive' between the lanes. I kept it at around 25mph but I still got 'hassled' by a guy on a 125cc - I pulled in, as soon as I could - no wave - and within 10 seconds saw him perform an emergency stop and a weave as a car suddenly changed lane up ahead. I naturally caught up with him and he then proceeded to travel at about 10mph with me on his tail, but no doubt with a heartrate of around 220 BPM Laughing

I just like to take my time and relax, I only filter if I'm riding fast/need to be somewhere quickly.

Are you seriously saying you filter at 50MPH more than the other traffic? surely this is suicidal?

Thinking about it that only works up to about 50 odd obviously.

I dont filter faster then say 100 anyway (on motorways etc) whatever happens.

But yes ill merrily do about 60 odd in stationary traffic, if its rolling ill tend to be going about 40.

If it gets tight i slow down, bus wheels etc Shocked can squeeze you suprisingly quickly.

But when theres about a meter ish of space, its open season.

Shocked

Wow you should play the lottery as you must be one of the luckiest guys around Laughing

each to there own I suppose but filtering at 60 past stationary traffic is just asking for trouble in my opinion, how can you see far enough ahead to know that a gap hasn't been created and someone is about to change lanes for example?

and back on topic, the only people that annoy me when filtering are the ones who will go towards a gap that they can easily make and then they slam the brakes on at the last minute and bottle it, luckily I havn't come across someone like this on my route to work in quite a while, and if someone catches up with me (which is rare anyway) then I am more than happy to let them past.

The only riders who "need" to be in front of me when I'm filtering are dizzys and cops. Everyone else can just wait till I let 'em past.

I filter all the time, through traffic on the motorway (slow moving traffic about 30-40 ish. I jump in and out of lanes but make sure i am save and don't make anyone have to break for me. I got stuck behind a Polish biker who must have thought filtering in the outside lane was like sunday driving, honestly i go so pissed off with him slowing and wobbling that i cut lanes and filtered through the left lane.

I am impatient that is one of the reasons i got a bike but i would not put anyone including myself in danger when filtering, if i noticed a biker up my ass i let let them over take. Thing to remember is you might not be in a hurry but the person behind might be, frustration causes accidents so just let people overtake.

I filter at 40 max but generally between 25 - 35. Any one who wants to overtake no problem but not if it is jam packed or other riders in front of me I wont pull over just to be waiting behind the person I just pulled over for if there are 4 other riders in front of him. The other day I was following a bike on the A13 going about 30 when a car pulled in front of me when I had just got to his rear wheel, there was absolutely F$*k all I could do and just clipped the side of his car with my fork and leg, I swerved into the next lane and hit the curb, lucky all that was damaged was my gear lever. This happened just as the rider in front of me went past the car you would think he would have been more alert for bikes.

Any rider that filters at 50 through stationary traffic good luck to you.

If you are risking potential injury as you are speeding or filtering inappropriately then leave 15 earlier. The people in the cars aren't bothered as they cant move, so why bust a gut to get past.

Relax

If you're late, so what.

If you're dead.....game over

I would generally agree.

I do a lot of filtering if only a couple of miles a day on a dual carriageway, because I do the same route every day I know which parts of road I have a lot more room than others and always know where I want to be. Pisses me off when I come up behind someone who is blatantly inexperienced at filtering and won't move out of the way, I have moved over for other riders to get past before and then simply followed them through. besides, them riding up there quicker than me makes the riders check their mirrors and gives me plenty of room to continue. Wink

I remember riding down the M6 to the NEC with wave we hit a load of traffic, so we got on the white line and weaved our way through it only to be slowed right down by 2 other blokes on bikes, they had seen us judging by the amount of times they looked at us in their mirrors but they only moved out of the way after wave managed to nip through a gap and they got the idea that we were going quicker than them.

Even if you think the rider trying to filter quicker than you is an idiot, better they hit a car up ahead than hit you trying to nip past your slow ass! Razz

Had a mad one today, I was out in the van at work, going up our dual carriageway, just at the beginning of our short slip road when a biker came up on the outside of me, cut across in front and straight off on the slip road, trust me, he was stupid, should of just waited behind me rather than risk that manouvre Sad

M8 i do hear what you are saying, and i do agree, but if someone is up your ass in a car you slow down and let them overtake not worth you going faster trying to stay infront. Same idea goes to biking i would say, if someone wants to go faster than me then cool batter on ahead.
