I'm thinking of giving WoW a go. Been into RPG games for a while and have been playing Warcraft 3 alot recently.

Do any of you play it? Is it any good for non-hardcore players that only play for an hour or two a day?

I use an Acer Travelmate 290E laptop. Has 256mb RAM, 1.3ghz processor, Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME graphics card (32mb?). Would that be enough to play reasonably?

Is there anything else I should be looking at instead?

Rick.

https://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/faq/technology.html gives the list of both minimum and recommended specs.

Personally, having played the game for a while with 512mb of RAM, and then moved on to played with 1024, I 'd definitely recommend going for 1024 if you possibly can - made a huuuuuuge difference to my gameplay.

Dont bother, its crap anyway

Its so damn repetitive, killing bad guys to level up constantly for hours and hours, Give it a miss.

If you like online games try eve-online, I got addicted to that big time, had to quit as it was taking over my life.

That's a personal opinion, everyone is different. I looked at Eveonline and was tempted but went for World Of Warcraft and think its great. It canget a bit repetitive, and a bit frustrating, but then, so do all games.

You can get a free 10 day trial and see what its like, if you're not keen after that, you don't have to sign up.

I think it's boring, but the other half has been playing it for 6 months now and still loves it. I think he keeps things fresh by trying out new characters and ocassionally switching from Horde to Alliance? The only part i like is where you can make the characters dance - pure genius! Mr. Green

If you want to see what the game play looks like, then look at this video (it's also very funny too if you follow RPG)

PvP from the start, Daggerspine, for 9 solid months.
No real skill involved, imho.

Then again, you're also the guy who thinks WoW has a "community".

Is a group of people who spout shite at each other over a common compter game not a "Community"?

I've actually found having limited time I can still enjoy the game. Granted perhaps I'll never see the very high end game but there are options. In this respect it's a great improvement on Everquest where you'd spend the hour or two finding, and then making your way to, a group as soloing wasn't an option for the majority of players.

If that's what your idea of a "community" is then I really do feel sorry for you Sad
Of all the MMORPGS I've played/betad (which is most of them) WoW has the worst social atmosphere I've seen.

As the original question, it's enjoyable on a casual basis until you hit the high fifties/sixties (levels), but that hardware will be a nightmare to play on I suspect. WoW is very RAM hungry even with a decent graphics subsystem.

I have been playing WoW since european Beta and everytime I try another game, I keep coming back. Sure the grinding is boring, but once you get to level 60, there's plenty to do. Yes that stuff at 60 does require time and effort, but i find it bloody good fun. A few hours a day is plenty to progress, great if you like RPG's. Read some lore, quest a bit, then do some PvP. If you get into a good Guild, then the community is quite good. Like Adam_P said, try the 10 day trial or something, you may like it!

So you find WoW skilless and boring, but love CS? Thinking

To be honest I think the majority of games get boring and predictable when you play them a lot. What makes a game appeal to me above the competition is if I can find a good community. But regardless of what game you're talking about, 95% of online gamers are idiots. It's just luck if you come across a good group of people to play with.

I'm finding it alright so far. I use the PvP Dentarg server, character names Kallarn and Tommar. Runs well enough, did upgrade to 512MB after some major slow downs in the big cities.

Anyone else use the Dentarg server?

I've been playing this (on the Aszune server) for about 6 months now, my brother got me addicted to it when I went down to visit last September (to the point that his wife, my other half and another friends wife all refer to it as "The Mistress"). I have half a dozen characters on both sides so get variety in the type of play but can see how it ca be monotonous as the quests remain the same. Not really into the pvp side of things, but have found a couple of good people to game with (a father and son team, the son only a couple of years younger than me).
