Does anyone here ever "cover" another rider when they are out and about?
I was just thinking about this the other day, when i was following my mate on his hire scooter.
As he only does 60mph and he only has around 2 months experience, i normally ride behind him just to cover him a bit from cars.
The best example i can think of is when i went for a rideout with palmer... palmer was ahead of me and i was behind him, at a roundabout a car pushed infront of me and got between us. Palmer wasnt aware but this car, IMO, was getting too close for comfort to palmers anal passageway. So at the next chance i overtook the car and pulled in behind palmer, slowed down a little and gave him a bit of extra room. (This proved supprisingly usefull as when shirley slid on the next roundabout, i was able to stop in enough time for the car to stop aswell, otherwise who knows what could have happened).
Another example was when i went for a ride my other mate around my area, my indicator had blown and whilst going round a roundabout we went past a police car waiting to enter... my mate noticed the car before me and drifted over slightly, just enough to block my indicator from the squad car waiting to pull in, so that he couldnt see it blinking at stupid speeds
I sometimes do it for L-Plate'rs aswell, if a car is causing them trouble i will see if i can get in behind them and give them some room from the car behind. It doesnt bother me to have a car right up behind me, im used to things like that from racing speedway, but i just think that for certain people, L-Plater's and just more polite riders, its a realy unfair thing to do?
So does anyone else do this kind of thing for other bikers or anything? ____________________ CBT Aug '03 ... Gilera GSM 50 ... Honda NSR 125 Aug '04 ...

Most of the people I ride with are on L's that can't do more than 50mph so I'll always hang at the back of the pack to give them a bit of cover from twatty car drivers and the like. ____________________ Now: '00 Kawasaki ZRX1100R - Past: '84 Yamaha DT125, '89 Kawasaki KLR600, '97 Yamaha XJ600N

I "helped" a 125 rider out once - saw him being extremely closely tailgated by a tarted up saxo full of track-suited cock jockies. So overtook the car and slowed right down, getting slower and slower and slower. They soon got pissed off and went down a side road - I hoped they lived down that street because it was a cul-de-sac |

I actually had an unknown rider cover for me back when I was on the CG125 with L plates....
(A470 north from Cardiff to Brecon for my 1st time, anyone who knows the twisties just north of Merthyr??)
I was doing about 45-50mph, and I'll admit that I was approaching the edge of my comfort zone when this pratt in a Beemer roars up behind and starts tailgating me.
Starting to get seriously nervous when what I think was a GSXR overtakes the Beemer and pulls alongside me - he's almost riding along the centre line, so I ease over to the left as best I can to give him some room. He gives the thumbs up, and slowly eases off the throttle to make the cager slow down and give me some room.
Luckily the Beemer pulls off at Garw Nant Forestry, and I breathed a sigh of relief before my new-found anonymous biker friend pulls away and disappears into the distance as if I'm standing still.
If you recognise yourself from this description, all I can say is I seriously owe ya one!! ____________________ 1st bike (Sept'06 - May'10) : 1991 GPZ500S / Current bike (since Nov 2009) : 2003 Suzuki Bandit 600N

I'll normally ride at the back of a group, or if I'm out and about and I see a car all over the back of a smaller bike/newer rider, I'll normally go between them and give the rider soem breathing space.

i regularly cover my g/f who can only do 40 and once we hit the 40's the cars are right up her arse. I always ride behind and to the right so if any one takes they arnt near her. Also when my mate comes out aswell we block the whole lane off, and if it's only a one lane then they all have to wait. ____________________ My eBay Items |

When I ride out with my OH he always rides behind me to cover me as he knows I hate it when cars insist of riding right up my arse! Dont get me wrong I am out on my own every day but when he does come along its a comfort to know that the cagers cant get to me, it really pisses me off when they try to hitch a lift almost, its not like I crawl along anyway ____________________ Live on the Isle of Wight and ride a CBR600F |

On the flip side, has anyone been "Covered" by another rider?
I had this on my NSR, and i suppose this is where my need to help out other riders stems from. I was riding back from Kings Lynn speedway at about 10pm, going down the A47 being blown about by the wind, maxing out at about 70mph with not very good lights, i noticed this car come storming up behind me. He refused to overtake me though, and just sat there behind me, litterally polishing my numberplate for me...
Next thing i know theres a large rumble and a bright light next to me, turned round to see this biker on a big sports bike (It was a Gixxer6 , although i didnt know at the time), he gave me the nicest nod ever and droppe behind me, the car pulled right back and this guys headlights lit the road up a lot more than mine, and he stayed behind me for about 5 miles until his turning came Top Bloke!
Of course i have had the adverse affect aswell, somebody who tried to get behind me, im guessing to cover me - god knows, but after about 2 miles of following me and helping me out from cars behind, he obviously got bored and tried the dodgiest overtake on me ive ever seen... pushed me right to the side of the road and almost onto the grass verge... Talk about undoing someones good work ____________________ CBT Aug '03 ... Gilera GSM 50 ... Honda NSR 125 Aug '04 ...

As most of my mates have big bikes and I don't like speed, I'm usually the slowest one in a group. One of the big hairy bikers always hangs back and rides behind/next to me while the others go and play. Every so often, they change places so that everybody gets to play, as well as admire my shapely bottom... |

I always do it.
I have a few good mates who when we go out we're always covering each other. Unspoken, it just happens. We stagger when riding in line, stay out on overtakes to show the road is clear, cover at junctions. If there's a slower rider with us someone will always be looking after them.
Only way to be. |
