i know this is probably a very common, and quite tiring topic but i dont know much about motorcycles and any help or advice from anyone who knows what they are talking about would be very much apreciated.

i am 21 and am really keen on getting an nsr 125r i have seen down at the local honda dealership (edinburgh). It was registered in jul of 2001 (the guy at showroom didn't know if it was an ry or an r1), it has a suciously low number of miles (786) and it is up for 1999.

i spent a good number of hours on this forum going through the newbie pages, what to look for when you buy and other kinds of interesting stuff. When i went to see the bike today it seemed to be in very good condition on the outside (apart from a scrape on the bottom of the left plastic wing). i asked the guy why it had so few miles on it and he told me that the bike had been in an accident and had been lying around there for quite some time(i am not sure what to make of this) and has only been on sale for 10 days. I asked him how serious the crash was and he said that it wasn't the frame or anything but just the plastic bits. He didn't go into much more detail apart from that and said that he would also give a three months warranty if anything should go wrong. Since i dont have my cbt yet i am going to go with a friend and ask him to see the bike and maybe give it a testdrive.

SO, that is my story. Anything else specific i could maybe ask the guy about? Any input would be appreciated. thanks for your time

Oh and one last thing. When giving the bike a good visual inspection everything seemed pretty clean underneath apart from the rear red spring just underneath the seat. It had paint peeling off from the first ring of the spring. Is that just cosmetic and nothing to worry about?

thanks

HPI! Get the bike checked as the crash may have been recorded, if so you want to stay clear of it to be honest. Also if your 21 and can afford a £2000 125, why not go for direct access and buy yourself a nice 400? seems more sense to me, Thumbs Up Dan

Thanks for that. To be honest time is the main reason, and the amount of time required to do a cbt is next to nothing so i can be on the bike in no time, which is what i want. i think a 125 will do just fine for me. Also the nsr125r are becoming quite rare now and i am hoping it will hold its value reasonable well, so that if worst comes to worst i can sell it with not much loss

Thanks though. i will look into getting an hpi

Well If you take a direct access course most take less than a week to take and pass, but I can see the appeal of the nsr, good luck with the cbt, Thumbs Up Dan

tbh mate I would take the advise off bidman, you can do your das really quickly now. I booked my theory last week and took it on friday and passed and am booking the das for in 2 weeks, I could of done it this week but can't get time off. So in total I could have my full license within 3 weeks.

But I do understand that u just want to get on the bike asap as I was like you and I got my clr125.

It sounds like a good bike mate but as already mentioned get a hpi done.

Also due to the bike been sitting there for a while u maybe able to get them to drop the price to £1600 if you are lucky.

Either way good luck Thumbs Up

Just found out that, due to the fact that i have an eu drivers license, it will take me 3 to 4 weeks to get a provisional uk lisence in order for me to do my cbt. If i was to try and get a proper uk bike lisence (forgot what its called) it will be an even longer wait.

So my question now is, if all goes well when i go to see the bike again with my mate and i feel that i would like to purchase it, is it worth keeping the bike in my garage for 3 to 4 weeks just standing there, or is it better just to pass it up for now, and once i get my cbt to see if it is still there, or if not then try and look for something else.

It's just that i feel like its quite a good offer, especially with nsr 125's being quite rare in these parts of the uk.

So i guess my question is: is it bad for the bike to be standing around and not being driven?

Sorry if all of this seems quite trivial. Thanks again

I won't be able to ride it for about 4 months, but I'm already looking for a bigger bike for when I pass my A2.

If you think about it, 3-4 weeks isn't that long so if you think it's a good offer then you should definitely jump at the opportunity to buy it.

You'll just have to sit and stare at it in your garage for longer, that's all. Laughing

I'd say pass it up for now get your licence sorted and then think about getting a bike, they aren't really that rare and i'm presuming its a reasonable price for a reason, ie. the crash. Dan Thumbs Up

Have a look at this link, its got some information on the nsr made by myself and some other members of the forum,

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=74104

Hope this helps, also i would wait a bit longer with the NSR you have been looking at, keep an eye on biketrader, that will give you an idea of the prices.

Thats why a part of me is so keen to get. I had a look on biketrader
just before i went to see it yesterday and first of all, the only nsr's available were at least 200 miles away. secondly the ones that were in the £2000 pounds region, and of similar age, had all done from 5000 to more than 7000 miles. Thats why it seemed to me that an nsr with 700 miles on it, for two thousand pounds was a bargain.

Well it had to be Two Wheels didn't it, but the bike seems to have gained 100 miles since being advertised on the website. No pics though...

actually that was what i was going to get until i started reading up about the nsr. I am sure it is a great bike but there are two things which make the nsr more favourable for me. First of all the nsr is cheaper (from what i have seen). Secondly there is the reliability issue (i am not saying that the rs125 is unreliable but, from what i heard about the nsr and from my experience with hondas in general, it seems to me that the nsr would be more reliable).

Thanks anyway though

Shows how much you know then, honda does not mean reliability.

The RS 125 is a cracking bike if its looked after, you only get problems when they are not looked after.

A lad that rides with us (and nearly keeps up) his never has problems and he goes miles on it but then again he looks after it.

They are 6 and 2 3's as far as reliability goes.

2 strokes will get thrashed, especially nsr's. If the shock paint is peeling that probably indicates its been abused somewhat. As for the mileage, and if its a mechanical tacho, chances are its been tweaked.

But hey - consider this:

For 1700 ono you can get my CBR600 (go to www.ebikeinsurance and do yourself a quote)

Its got meta alarm, datatag, totally standard, and runs mint (ask others on here).

hey i really wouldn't mind buying your bike but with me not having a uk drivers license it will take me forever to get a bike license which will allow me to drive a 600cc bike (i will have to get a uk car license for that, but the cbt is no problem).

Regarding the mileage, the place that is selling the bike is an official honda dealer and the guy did say that the mileage has been verified and that it is correct.

Thanks for the offer though
