Hi

I have finally booked my test and training Very Happy

I'm not that keen on the dates but most places are really busy atm. My training is on 1st/2nd/3rd March and the test is on 13th March I will have the morning as a refresher.

I wish they could of got me the test for the 4th or abit closer but nevermind I will have to practice on my 125 while i'm waiting.

Has anyone got any tips?

Thanks

Couple of questions, I would be grateful if anyone could help

1. When doing the U turn in the road do you have to put the indicator on?

2. When doing the emergency stop do you have to drop down to first then pull over to the side? what happens if u stall it?

3. How does the examiner mark you? do they come on a ride with you or do they stand on the side? If they come on a bike aswell how do they mark u Question

4. Whats the most common thing to fail on?

Thanks

See the New Riders section.

No.
No - stop in a straight line without changing down.
They either ride or drive behind you.
The U turn.

Your instructor will go through all of it, don't worry and good luck.

Couple of points to add..

The examiner can follow in a car aswell and when I learned to ride I was told the most common test failures were things like putting your foot down on U turn, not cancelling indicators and inappropriate use of speed.

1- on u turn you do not indicate but you must do good observations before and after the manouvere.
2- on e-stop you stop, shoulder check, down to first then pull-over.if you stall so long as it is safe to do so re-start then pull over
you will be taught all this on DAS..
3- the examiner will either follow in car or on bike - in radio contact
on mine it was by car.. Very Happy

You will be fine doing the U-turn in the road because whilst doing my DAS, we did the U-turn over and over and over again until we did it perfectly every time.

Also, my examiner followed me in a Rover 600 and I had to pull over and wait for him twice!

It was a very enjoyable 3 days though! Good fun.

i was told for the emergency stop that you dont change down and that the examiner is looking for the front to dive and you not to leave a 30ft black line off your back tyre.
also once stopped look round and feet down paddle to the kerb then sort out a neutral.
i think the idea is that you stopped safely, now get out of the way of the next idiot.
main thing is dont get nervous, practice on the roads you will take your test on.
learn to actually look at the speed signs and go at that speed.
most areas have a sneaky stop sign where you need to stop even if nothing is coming.
but your das people should show you all the usual fails
i passed first time after riding for less than 1 month(had a 125 to practice on between cbt and das)

ok cool thanks for all the replies.

I now understand the u turn but i'm abit unsure still about the emergency stop.

So basically the aim is to stop as quickly as possible surely if you stall, its more of a risk of someone going in to the back of you?
Are u allowed to drop down the gears just before it stalls e.g say I was in 3rd and have to stop I would apply both front and rear brakes and just before I come to a complete standstill I would drop the gears down to first then pull over safely - would that be ok?
Or is it best to stop let it stall then push it to the side of the road

I know I will be taught these but just thought I would try and get a better start.

Thanks very much for your help Thumbs Up

E-stop, Squeeze the Front more than rear without locking either, don't even think about the gears, if you clutch in just before you come to a halt it won't stall anyway, the thing is whether you ride to the side or paddle to the side do it quickly and safely and remember your mirror and shoulder check as soon as you've stopped and before you move to the side.

Personally I think it's quicker to keep the clutch in and quickly paddle to the side rather than trying to find the right gear to pull off in, it just depends on the situation but you defo won't fail for paddling it so why risk screwing up your gear selection.

You will do it several times on your DAS along with the U turn, so don't sweat it, your instructor will see you right.

Good Luck

Thumbs Up

From my test: You have to accelerate to the speed appropriate for the road and conditions (bear in mind: if they don't call off the test, the weather is good enough to do the speed limit appropriate for the road, i.e, probaly 30mph for the place you'll do maneuvers in). This means you will be in second or, more likely, third by the time you get the signal to stop.

You stop as fast and as safely as possible; this will be a longer distance if it's wet, a shorter distance if it's dry, so your judgement comes into it. If in doubt, taking a few yards more is better than locking both front and rear and binning it. Safety is the issue, after all. In practice: learn how to apply the front brake gradually ("snap to the point where the brakes touch the disc, gradually, but confidently, increase pressure; then, once below 10mph or so, yank it" is what I was told).

Once you've stopped, do a left and right rear observation to ascertain what's behind you: In the absolute worst case (truck coming up at speed, for example) you'll have to drop the bike and leg it, in the best case, you have all the time in the world. In practice, the latter is what will happen during your test:

I was told to do the observations, then sort out gears, then observe again and then pull over to the side, do observations again, then wait for the examiner to tell you how you did. Other posts suggest suggest pushing the bike over, though, so I'd strongly suggest askig your instructor for what works best in your area. Stalling may be quite OK, as long as you behave properly after you stalled.

At the end of the day, though, both U-turns and e-stops are head-jobs: If you think you'll do OK, you will. It takes a bit of practice to get them right, but eventually it will just "click".

I failed on "inappropriate use of speed" and other "silly" mistakes and that is the sort of thing you really need to look out for: The big things will be fine, it's the details you need to pay attention to. If you do, you'll surely breeze through.

thanks everyone alot of sound advise which i'm sure will help me.

Do you think its a problem that the training is on March 1/2/3 but the test is on 13th? I will also have a morning training session on 13th
They are just really busy and have no free slots Sad

Just make sure you get out on your 125 as much as possible while your waiting. And practice the advise given by your instructor.

Did my CBT in Nov 04 on a Cityfly. Liked it so much I bought one via ebay for 1k.

A very good bike to practice on, did lot's of u-turn practice. So much in fact, on my DAS was always being told to use the whole road.

The only issue I had, which prompted me to do my DAS after 3 months was going up/down the A2 in lane 1. being cut up by everyone.

Traded it for the Bandit.

Yeah I have a City Fly 125 and I must agree with you about a good starter bike.
I'm looking to trade mine in as well for a bandit or something similar. What are garages like on trade in on CLR's? Mine has 9.5k on the clock and is 1999 reg
