Why do you want something with a lot of power for a 250?

Why not just get a 400?

Insurance isn't based on CC, nor as he obviously realises is power.

Also factor in maintanence and part's for the vehicle, assuming you don't intend to keep it for more than a couple of year's. If you are not carrying out the work yourself this will also add up. Whatever anybody say's i beleive a 4-stroke requires less time and money to keep on the road than a 2-stroke.

ZXR250 Laughing Cool

Like many people have said, i wouldn't like to find parts for one. I know groovearmarda had his on e-bay a while back. Would have been handy getting another one just for parts.

I've been informed that elliotts motorcycles is a good source of imported parts as they only deal with 250-400 imports. They're in swindon i believe.

I'm always working on my bike every other month just to keep it maintained and it requires a labour of love, so if you want a reliable bike that you can just jump on and run away with, stay away from 250's, but if you're dedicated and willing to persevere and milk the goodness out of it, a 250 can be a sharp tool.

They're as light as anything, and the 2 strokers weigh as heavy as a gnat's fart.

You've got to bear in mind a 4 stroke inline 4 250 only produces power after about 8000RPM and then it just screams to something silly like 18k or there abouts. Back wheel power is in the region of 40-43bhp (manufacturers quote for bhp for my 250 was 46). The ZXR seems to be the most powerful of the 4 strokes, but it produces its power over a broader range than say an RGV which is peaky, but damn, once you're in the powerband, you're smiling. The strokers have the equivalent power of a 400, if not a tad more.

On the basis of insurance, my quote for my zxr250 was about £175 less than a ZXR 400, TPO, ungaraged in a leicestershire postcode.

if your gona have a 250 and dont mind tinkering / working on your bikes get a 2 stroke, 4 stroke 250's are just toys in comparison. an rgv 250, or kr1s 250 will piss all over a vfr or zxr 400 in the right hands an rgv is over 60bhp and less than 140kg as standard i was gona get one of these for a track bike, but there were none for sale anywhere near where i live so i got a zxr instead..... oh and they look and sound frikin awesome! but as titz says, if you want a reliable machine steer clear of the 250's... practical they are not.

You should be able to get a 400 for the price of a decent 250 though.

ok then, another question, how much do you think i would get for an nsr 125 1998, really good condition, blue/red and white, soon to be fully derestricted to about 30hp, and what other bike could i get for that amount? not that i dont like the nsr, i think its a great bike, but as i said iwould like something with some more power

technically your only allowed 3hp more than that anyway if its 30 Wink so unless your intending to break the law, id stick with the nsr, youl have a better power/weight ratio than a restricted 400. plenty of people derestrict the bigger bikes though which im not sugesting you do offcourse! All the 'sports' 250s will need to be restricted as well. Sports 2 stroke 250s can make almost as much power as a 400, but be a bit harder to ride, often.

Are you from the UK or Australia?

The UK restriction is based upon power until you are 21. This isn't directly related to cc. The power limit is 33bhp; 2T 250's make 45-60bhp.

If you are from Aus then fair enough. Learners are restricted to 250cc's. Smile

There is also a power to weight ratio limit in aus that stops you getting any 2 stroke other than the NSR250 (45bhp)

CBR250 is the bike to have, but finding one can be hard!

No, the ZXR250 IS THE bike to have and i'm not being biased Razz . I've managed to put about 80 litres of gear on my bike. 40 on a tank bag, and 40 in a tail pack, a nice chain and lock + disklock under the seat and it still rides OK.

If you're willing to wait a year, i'll sell you mine for dead cheap!

Mentioned twice in one thread for different reasons Cool

Anyway.. I did love my ZXR 250, till it had a few problems... which was kind of sudden. Had covered 30k killometers by the time, and looks like a rebuild is in order. Seeing asi wasnt that in love with it i got the CBR.

More usuable power than a 2t 125 (i would say...) and if you do get a zxr i happen to have a restrictor kit for it... Wink

NSR250 MC28 Razz

The only one I've ever seen in the flesh turned up at Boxhill a few months back. Everyone congrigated away from my RVF toward the stroker Sad Couldn't blame them though, the thing was deliscious and had been kept spotlessly clean/running by its 40+ year old owner.

I had been tempted by one when I sold the RVF as an even more 'extreme' riding/maintenance experience. However, it would have cost a bomb, plus just couldn't live with it in the traffic clogged southeast (it was bad enough trying to get more than 5 miles of clear road on the RVF (limited overtaking potential when wanting to ride smoothly), the NSR would have been a night mare. Would make the 400s seem like overweight underbraked also-rans (and once tuned, tweaked/ridden well would thoroughly embarass them).

But oh so nice for that magical 5% of euphoric riding time.

If I lived closer to Brands, could find one, take out a credit card and kidnap Jeremy Burgess, then maybe....

In my eye the only bike that matches the RC30 on looks too.

V-Twin. The MC28's the only (and latest) one with a single sided swinger as standard. Heard some came with Marvic lightweight wheels as standard as well.

MC21 is very nice as well, though has a dual 'banana' swingarm.

Hmmm, exotic Hondas - whatever next?
