I know these types of posts have appeared before but things change and it's often useful for other joiners of the forum.

I am always keen to learn and refresh my skills as a rider, last year I did a Bikesafe course which was excellent.

I also joined the IAM but did not get on so well with that, their philosophy seems to only apply to BMW riders, I felt quite the outsider being on a sports bike and not having a beard Wink

Further to the above are there any other training days/courses that I could attend? I am going to do a track day but I'm talking more along the lines of road based courses.

cheers

BMF Blue Ribon. Carried out by most training schools. I got quoted £250 for the day. You also receive 12 months membership.

Trouble with advanced training (from what ive hered)

IAM - Tends to be very set system, you do everything this way, thats it..

Rospa - Tends to be very about makeing progress*, miss a safe overtake and you'll probably fail.. probably because its part of police training, its the more serious training of the two and to hold a rospa certificate you'll need to redo it every 3/5 years.

Imo both have their Thumbs Up points, but i think the best would be do both and take from it what you find usefull...

I'd love to do some training with this guy -

(have a read through these)
https://www.survivalskills.clara.net/rskills.htm

Too far from me, but your not all that far away Thumbs Up

*(one guy said the less time your out on the road then the less likely you are to have an accident, which might be a good thing to say if you get pulled for speeding)

Being lazy here, anyone know how much training for IAM / ROSPA is?

Had a look on the ROSPA site, but most seemed to be about the test, not training.

I spoke to a friend of a friend who's an observer with IAM and apparently its about 90 quid a day to cover fuel and costs of observer.

However, I dont know if thats a set fee, or a 'friend of a friend' fee, or if theres any other extras etc.

To be honest, sounded fairly reasonable, like being back at rider school

Q2. How much do the advanced driving lessons cost?
A2. The RoSPA Advanced Drivers Association (RoADA) has local groups all over the country who deliver support and tuition in preparation for the Advanced Driving/Riding Test. This is run on voluntary basis, the instructors are usually retired or serving police officers who offer their services in their spare time to promote a better standard or driving across the UK. This means that you do not pay for your tuition on a lesson-by-lesson basis but rather pay a nominal fee to join your local group and make a contribution to petrol costs if necessary. The fee to join your local group varies from group to group but is usually somewhere around the £30 mark.

IAM fees are much the same as RoSPA

Purchase a "Skill for Life" package on-line - Explanations

The next series of pages will take you through the steps for enroling on-line for a single Skill for Life Package at £85.00 (including post and packaging) for a Car or Motorcycle. If you are aged 25 or under on the date of signing up for this package, then you are entitled to a £10.00 discount.

The "Skill for Life" package comprises Associate Membership of a local IAM Group to help prepare for the IAM Test, the relevant IAM manual, the IAM Test Fee itself, and your first years membership of the IAM after passing the test. This package is valid for up to 12 months after purchase (and can be extended further upon application). After submission of your payment details, please allow up to 14 days for delivery of the package (but the delivery is normally in a lot less time than that).

You may also have to stump up a few quid for the observer's petrol.

Did the IAM's skill for life course with the North Glasgow group last year. £85 and that's all you pay (unless you are under 26, in which case it drops to £65 I think). Different group work things differently in terms of paying for observers fuel costs etc. Most of the guys and girls observing in our group will let you buy them a cup of coffee but refuse any money for fuel. The £85 gets you as many days/evenings observed riding as you need to prepare you for your test, and one test fee (along with the membership fee for the first year after you have passed the test). If you fail the test, I think it is something like £20-ish to re-do it, but you don't pay any extra for more observation.

As a personal aside, I really feel that my riding and observational skills improved no end after doing that, and while you may not like the way the IAM do things, I am of the opinion that any advanced training with any organisation it worthwhile.
