Just wanted to know how much eye tests cost at places like Vision Express or Specsavers.. I've looked on both their sites, you can book appointments online but I can't find anything out about costs.. anyone got an idea what they cost?

The cost of an eye test is somewhere around 20 quid!

if:
aged 60 or over
under 16, or under 19 and in full time education
you have diabetes or glaucoma
you are 40 or over and have a close relative with glaucoma
a hospital ophthalmologist say you are at risk of glaucoma
you ar registered blind or partially sighted
you are entitled to vouchers for complex lenses
or:
you or your partner receive income support, family credit, income based job seekers allowance, pension credit guarantee, and are entitled to or named on a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate, or are named on valid HC2 certificate?

you are probably entitled to free tests

if not, and your on a low wage you might be able to get some form of help or reimbursement for the charges by filling in a HC1 form at the optitians!

Hope that helps xXx

Thanks.. I'm 20, technically in education as I'm an apprentice but I doubt that'd count.. will look into that HC1 form though I think.. will try and get down the opticians on Saturday see if they got any appointments for that day..

thanks for help.

Also, If you work with VDUs your employer is legally obliged to pay for eye tests.

With most of these places, if you subsequently purchace glasses or lenses from them, they will discout the price of the test from them.
So thry will say is sort of 'free'. But really, you're paying for it in the glasses purchace.

Other places I have been to may be cheaper, say a £5 test. But no discount or other offers on the glasses.

At six monthly intervals I arrange full eye tests for every member of staff in my department. This is in line with the HSE directive and is paid for by the company. Its the same at any workplace.
It the law Smile
I think your getting mixed up with employers responsibilites to provide glasses. That is only for work with VDu's.

Possibly, I know that our tests are done on site and its not a full one. If anything is found you then go for a propper one if you will. Ours ain't done at any specific interval though, you can go when you want.

But yeah costs for spec's are limited to the bit related to vdu bit.

Specsavers did exactly the same thing for me a few months back. Only they didn't have my lenses in at the time, so I assumed I'd pay for the contact lens test + freebie lenses when they arrived. They arrived, the people in the shop thought I'd already paid. Bargain. Thumbs Up

Every now and again boots, specsavers etc etc do a test for £5 with a voucher, normally £15-20 though.

Costco do them for £15 if you have a card.

I always use an ophthalmic optician for my eye tests as they are eye specialists as opposed to lense fitters. The test costs a little more but it is money well spent.
I believe that the people who work at places such as Specsavers and Vision Express etc are the ones that were unable to gain employment with McDonalds.

Tesco optians do eye tests for FREE.

You don't even have to buy glasses from them either and they'll absorb the cost.

Granted there aren't exactly a ton of Tesco optians and you feel a bit of a bum not buying after you (or rather the GF) gets her prescription but £20 is what 13 litres of petrol!

The actual floor staff at specsaver, I know for sure are all going through the dispensing opticans course....
And believe me it is not a easy course, due to the large amount of maths involved.
I would guess that vision express staff do the same.

As to Tesco/Asda... Its just the usual staff, with one trained tester.

I got a free eye test at Tescos and was happy with it.
Yes they did make a slight effort to sell me glasses, but the figures showed I was absolutely fine for what was needed for the lorry licence.

If I was you I'd get two tests done at individual opticians and compare results, the last time I had my eyes tested they tried to con me saying I needed glasses/contact, but they needed to work on their hustle more as the next time I went in for a follow up I saw a different optician and he told me I had perfect 20/20 vision. That was at Specsavers btw.

Heh, its a bit like dodgy MOT places tbh. My dad had a similar experience an opticians, he thought it was uber $, so went to a Tesco to have a check and they said his vision was fine.
