For the photographers amongst you...

I've just bought myself my first digital SLR.

I've got a Nikon D100, and currently have 2 lenses for it. A Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC for Nikon, and a Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6G. Also bought the Nikon Autofocus Speedlight SB-80DX and a spare battery for the body.

All the photos I've taken with it so far have been a bit pants TBH, but I'm just learning how to use the thing at the moment. Hoping to get myself up to speed so that I can go to some track days in March and take some pictures. Very Happy

Anybody else into photography? What kit have you got? What do you use it for?

I'm just getting back into photography and got myself a 350D from Canon. Apart from the standard lens (which is 'ok' not great) I got a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM LENS which is excellent for the money.

It takes a while to get back into the swing of things, but once you've learnt all your settings and can breeze through them without thinking, you can get down to the shot composition technique again (I've always found this to be tricky - hope to get better with practice).

Forgot to say what I use it for so.....

....almost anything, portraits, wildlife, bikes (of course) both stationary and in motion, abstract pictures (I won a local comp a few years ago for close ups of reflections on car bodies), special events like airshows, shots for web sites...

I recently bought myself a Nikon D50 which came with the standard lens. I also bought a spare battery for it as well. I am looking into getting a 300mm lens although I haven’t decided which one yet. Let me what you think of the stigma lens.

When I get my new bike on Sunday I plan to take pictures of ride outs and scenery (not while I’m riding the bike!). I managed to find a rucksack/camera bag as well which is very useful as it can hold other stuff like food and drink.

If you think you are taking crap pictures try finding a photography book which will have loads of hints and tips especially on how to set up the ISO speed and aperture. Have a look for one called “photography in easy steps”.

And when you do take good pictures and you want to show them off buy (or download) this www.photodex.com/products/proshowgold/ it allows you to make slide shows and put them onto DVD.

The Sigma lens is lovely. Really smooth to use and has that "well built" feel to it. I had a look at the Tamron equivalent, but preferred the Sigma.

I'm not rubbish at taking pictures, (I don't think anyway) it's just that I've only had this camera since last night so am still learning how it works.

It's a lovely camera, think I might just have to have a go at prising it out of his sticky paws and trying that dpchallenge.

love photography but not had time for it in recent years....have a little digicam which takes lovely pics when I remember to charge it!

Have the Canon 300D, only hav ethe 18-55 lens though, would like a few more but can't justify them since most of my photos are portraits.

Have a few different filters to play with though (old school rather than photoshop editing Laughing

), would like some nice lights next rather than lenses tbh.

Got a Canon EOS 350D, a 430EX Speedlite flash and the following lenses:

Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (crappy standard lens)
Sigma 18-125mm f/3.5-5.6
Canon 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 (will be sold soon)
Sigma 50-500mm f/4-6.3
Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6

Would love to be able to justify a nice big f2.8 lens though... Drooling

Started taking some bike photos last year and love it. Hoping to get to loads more races this season.

Got a Nikon D50 with a 18-55mm DX and a 55-200mm DX lens. Pretty impressed with it so far. Should be much more suited to motorsport photography than my old Fuji S5000 as you conldn't pan while using continuous shooting. Might treat myself to another bigger zoom lens later this year.

Got myself a canon 350d a few months back but havent had the time to really get stuck into it. Was the twin lense kit the 18-55mm and the 75-300mm. Both are ok lenses but spcifically the 300 can be a bit soft at long focal lengths. I also picked up a 50mm 1.8f which is great for low light shots and portraits. It is a great lense for the price. Im pretty sure Nikon have a similar spec lense for a similar price.
Just buy a big memory card and just keep switching between settings until you get it right. can always delete em later. Nothing beats practice.

Something else I grabbed off ebay was a infra red remote for it. Comes in handy for long exposures so you dont move the camera when activating it and of course for getting in on the action when you need to.

To test out your zoom just go somewhere and find a subject that you think is a similar distance to the action on a track day and go nuts. Dont forget you can up the iso to help a bit with quicker shutter speeds. But this will also increase the noise level.
Maybe try shotting in AV just to simplify things a bit till you get the hang of it.

Now get ya arse out there and shoot shoot shoot.

Oh and google ya arse off. there is heaps of free info out there to help you along. Be warned though , its an expensive habit once you start. ENjoy Thumbs Up

I got a Canon Eos something or other - not digital though, used to do a load of sports photography a few years back and had stuff published in the local rag. Bought my wife a Fuji Finepix dig camera, although I wouldnt mind a nice digital camera Nikon or something - right then where's my lottery ticket Laughing

Can't wait for 8th April for the Lydden meet gonna try my hand at photographing something called a motorbike Laughing
