no need to be nasty to r6 bloke
he has a point
nike used to say 'just do it'
reebok talked about escaping the sofa

i think that is the main thing and getting the habit of doing it regularly

i have gone for a jog a few times recently and been surprised that I was better than I thought I would be. I enjoyed it and could go for a jog now but I cant escape the sofa.

maybe tomorrow

having the right shoes, the right size, the right socks or whatever may be important if it means you want to do it or wont stop from blisters or whatever

For years I couldn't run due to a) stitch and b) my legs ached. I cycled a hell of a lot, which alters the muscles due them doing same repition millions of times. But I found this method broke me in gradually, and in about a month or so I could run fine.

Something along the lines of-

Week 1-
1 day on, 1 day off-
1 minute run, 1 minute walk, for 20mins

Week 2-
2 minute run, 1 minute walk, for 30mins

Week 3-
4 minute run, 1 minute walk, for 30 mins

Week 4-
6 minute run, 1 minute walk, for 30 mins

Then just adjust times etc. depending on how your feeling.

Juding by what you have said about your feet and knees, I'd suggest seeing a specialist first. You could end up doing more damage than good.

And ALWAYS warm up/down and stretch. You will pay for it in the morning if you don't.

FFIW, a good pair of specific running shoes (saucony, brooks, asics etc) will not cost the earth, £60 will get you something more than adequate. Don't be tempted to go to a 'Sports Store'.

And finally, an mp3 player really does help Thumbs Up

I've given up trying to run, get sharp pains under my knees, so I've been cycling instead, taking the pooch with me. Dog gets tired before me though and she's now holding me back.

but for runnig I found taking the dog with me was good as they kept me going( if on lead) and also added protection for girlies running alone...

as well as trying all the methods for preventing blisters, i.e. 2 pairs of socks etc (Steve H, i know you said not to but i'm willing to try anything) Thumbs Up

Dont do this please, 2 socks will of course mean your trainers fit differently, you have less feel and too much padding. Your feet will become too hot as said about the blisters and possible athletes foot. Get the thorlos socks I mentioned and Steve H mentioned and you are good to go, i had no blisters after the Great North Run from wearing these socks. My dad wore the same make and style socks and he had no problems from the Great North Run, the London and New York Marathons a couple of years running.

Either that or the 1000 mile socks(actual name) which seemed as flawed as wearing 2 socks to me, but they are thin and wick the sweat away

three out the ten or so more guys that I train with had 1000 miles socks.....By the time they'd finished marching they had blisters on their heels the diameter of a tea cup! I appreciate running is different but I found that to be a terrible advertisement for them socks, especially when I just use two thick pairs and they've stood me proud Laughing

Leggy, I would recommend conditioning your feet rather than masking the problem as in the long run (excuse the pun) you won't always have a pair of them handy.

I haven't had much experience of knee injuries (thankfully, touchwood) but I use High 5 for all my energy drinks, bottles and shake mixers....I'm sure their sports supports are of equal quality (https://www.high5-online.com/acatalog/Sports_Clinic.html) Other than that your local running shop might be of more help!

Lastly, the best protection you can get for your knees are good running shoes. They are what will absorb most of the impact rather than your poor knee (am I soounding like a stuck record yet?).

I forgot to mention Hal Higdon's Site it's a fantastic source of information for runners.

There are dedicated training programmes for novice, casual and expert runners alike should you wish to use them.

You can have email reminders when it's time for a run and keep track of your progress too (plus it's all free of charge Smile ). I found it a great motivational tool when I first took up running Thumbs Up
