Apologies, this is a 'what bike' thread of sorts...

I've sold my ZX6R and hopefully my Supermoto will be gone by next weekend, leaving me with (hopefully) 4k.

I plan to buy a different bike and a car (the car at a later date, if I go back to uni this sept.). Thing is, I really can't make up my mind what bike is best so I'm hoping someone's been in a similar position before.

My brief: 27 years old, 3 year NCB, between 2 and 2.5k to spend. I don't do as much riding as I should and most of what I do is around town with some short commutes (so more or less a seasonal rider but by no means weekend warrior).

Option 1: A Honda Hornet which will be great around town and will be fine for commuting on B roads. On my budget I can get a looked after one with a few cosmetic mods. I do like the look of them and have owned one in the past but, well, it's not a sports bike.

Option 2: A ZX7R; I love these big girls (stable with a great front end) and like the idea of owning one. It's not really a town bike but will also be fine on the short commutes. I can also get a decent one on my budget and it's a lot more 'sportier' than the Hornet, although this will also be reflected in the running costs.

I keep on changing my mind every five minutes so I'm hoping someone can provide me with some arguments either way...in a nut shell it's a bit fo a head (Hornet) vs. heart (ZX7R) thing.

Thumbs Up Karma

For me it would be the Hornet, I've ridden a ZX7R through traffic and it's no picnic. Depends how comfortable you find the bike really.

Cheers

Cheers for the help guys, much appreciated Thumbs Up

Only problem being there's one vote for the Ninja, one for the Hornet and MarJay has chucked a spanner in the works by suggesting the 900 Hornet!

Hi

How happy are you round town on the ZX6R? If you are happy with that for the miles you do then go for the ZX7R. If it annoys the hell out of you then go for the Hornet.

For example I use an old FZR600 for commuting. Fine for the route I use, but if I was commuting through town I would hate it.

All the best

Keith

Cheers Keith,

This is the clincher really and the reason why I can't make my mind up: I loved my supermoto for going around town, I loved the ZX6R for longer trips but not so much around town.

I guess, now I'm selling up, I'm after a bike which will give me both for the price of one. Maybe I'm asking to much...

Buy a sportsbike and stick flat bars on it.

My Buell is excellent around town and is pretty good on faster stretches. It has a bikini fairing and flat bars and works quite well.

What about a Hornet 900 with a small fairing?

Hi

Does sound like what you are after is something like the Hornet. Maybe the 900, maybe a 1200 Bandit.

All the best

True, but I'm not to keen on the Fazer's looks. Hornet 900 does seem to be the better choice at the mo.

MarJay, stop throwing those spanners in (I've just found myself browsing the Beull's on Ebay!) Mr. Green

Thanks gain for the help! Thumbs Up

Well mine was modified to add the flat bars, so thats something you'd need to change.

A streetfightered sports bike of some kind?

You could probably just about get a zx7 and a Hornet 600 for £2,500 or a tad more if you shop around a lot.

Why is the 7 a handfull round town?

I have had my 7 from new for 4 years now and quite often I go for a play round town, baiting the boy racers and generally making a nuisance of myself Twisted Evil

It will depend a little on how tall you are (i'm 6'2'') and the 7 will feel heavy and slow turning compared to your 6 for a while, but there are easy suspension mods/tyre changes that can be done to alter that.

Don't get me wrong, i'm sure that the Hornet is a very accomplished bike too, but if you are looking for a bike with a history and kudos, the honda just aint it compared to the Ninja.

I has to wait for 6 years before I could afford to insure and but my 7 and it was worth it Karma
