I have been looking around for a system with no luck whatsoever. What I want is a surround sound system (5.1) that uses and optical input from my DVD player or Xbox 360. I cant find any systems that specifically state they do this.

also what is the range of cost for such a system? Are we talking a ton? £200?

Sorry if I appear lazy but its doing my head in!

You need to get a 5.1 receiver first. And it needs to have an optical input. I've got a Pioneer 5.1 Dolby Digital II receiver, and it cost me £70 on eBay, a year or more ago. Then I got 5 Mission speakers, a Mission subwoofer, stands for 4 speakers and 25m of premium cable, for £40. Now that was the bargain of the century.

If you're not keen of eBay, go to Richer Sounds (www.richersounds.com) and look at receivers, or full 5.1 packages. Check in the tick box thing they have, that the receiver has an optical input.

Richer Sounds are very good, and very cheap. I just got my DVD recorder from them (with optical output). Get the 3 year supercare thing; if you don't use it, they give you your money back anyway!

No worries! Mr. Green I went through the same thing when buying my DVD recorder; I was shocked at the lack of available resources via the internet which tells you the various methods to hook up a surround sound system.

It's worth mentioning that optical isn't your only route; co-axial is about as good. Also, receivers can be integrated into tuners and/or DVDs.

The DVD player supports coaxial too, but the xbox360 only has an optical. I tried the site but still couldnt find the search function that allows me to look for optical inputs only. I will keep looking though.

Cheers

Here's an example:

https://ws1.richersounds.com/common/productpictures/302777-1.jpg

That's the cheapest non-clearance receiver on Richer Sounds - £170. There are plenty to be had for less on eBay and such. Look in the bottom left corner of the back of the unit. There are 2 square black holes; they're the optical holes. On that receiver they're probably an input and an output. Mine only has an input, and for your needs you will only need an input.

Honestly, most half-decent receivers will have optical, it's not particularly new technology. Still the best around though.

Have a look on Richer Sounds, you should find what you're looking for at a reasonable price.
A quality seperate surround amp + speakers will sound so much better than a package system.

I got JBL 5.1 surround speakers from overclockers.co.uk

£120 in the clearance section, and have optical in, digital line in, as well as analogue/phono line in too.

I'm running that with the optical line in from mediacenter, and the PS2 is using standard stereo phono into the TV, which has a passthru into the JBL unit.

doesnt need a 5.1 decoder, can select which input you want to listen to, and has various surround modes in addition to "proper" surround.

Any chance of a model number feef? I think what rookie showed me there was overkill for my application! My mates got an LG one thats about the size of DVD case that is a decoder and the speakers are all seperate, thats the kind of thing Im looking for, otherwise I dont really have the space!
