The above, is a request that I've granted to those that ask that I just get to the point.
Naw -I went skating to the Ice Caps, Doncaster (https://www.the-dome.co.uk) and it was great Very Happy.
Resident DJ, loud music, lots of mates, and lots and lots of ice Very Happy.
5 of us went, and only one of us didn't fall over Laughing (and it wasn't me Razz ).
I spent 5 hours skating and now both my legs feel like someone's tried to pull my legs off. But no matter, I'm getting some skates on friday and I'm going again on saturday and sunday Very Happy Thumbs Up .

Any tips from all you experienced skaters out there?

I did it a little while ago. Used to go once or twice a week for about 3 - 4 months. Got pretty good at it.

I went again twice about 2 weeks ago with the g/f and was good fun Thumbs Up So i also want to get back into it Laughing

The adivce i would give you, is use Hockey Skates Thumbs Up Preferably the clip up type to start with, Laces if your strong enough to do them up tightly Laughing

They are a lot easier to skate on, maybe a little harder to pick up the first time, but after youve got the first hour out of the way, then youll start to pick up other things quickly.

To stop, drag your foot behind you at first, then learn to "slide stop" as i call it. Turning your feet sideways and skidding to a stop, its also cool for spraying people that have fallen over too Wink

I used to figure skate on a weekly basis, got quite good.
Got a grade 5 out of 12 (which sounds rubbish but you just try and do some of the stuff)

Gave up as couldn't get any further and didnt wanna risk hitting the Ice hard...it hurts.

Was frustrating as I could do some of the lever 12 jumps etc but couldnt do a couple of the things in level 6...so got no further.

now outgrown Ice skate

any one want? cost me £120 and had weekly use for an hour for 18months... you can do the maths /shrug/

Went to go the other week again after a long break...but gutted when boots dont fit ne more Sad

Hockey skates are good if you don't want to do anything more than skate round quickly, doing some cross overs and being a bit aggressive,

however if you wanna attempt any kind of spins, axels or jumps. you'll need figured skates. which tend to cost alot more.

Also new skates, dont forget to get the blades sharpened before taking to the ice Laughing

you may also need to blunt them a little before first use, personal preference really.

Like playing hockey, for which they were designed Laughing

Don't make them sound like they are a bad skate, just designed for a different purpose.

Oh how we used to love taking the piss out of the figure skaters at training. They would be on ice before our training and we used to go on doing spins and jumps and dancing with each other - but we had padding so just went for it without worrying about hitting the ice Thumbs Up Laughing

Used to play ice hockey for bristol bulldogs (play inline hockey now). Well worth getting your own skates, the hire ones are utterly crap! Never really had any advice on how to skate, just make sure your confident at stopping before getting any faster.

Know what you mean about your legs being pulled off. Used to do 10 hours a week of training, you will find your thighs beef up if you keep at it.

Good stuff Thumbs Up Smile

Did not mean to make hockey skates sound rubbish, just pointing out the difference, dont want him spenind £65 on skates to realise he has the wrong ones?

Yeah I used to laugh at the hocket players crying at their dislocated bits, I bought figure skates because they fitted me better than hockey skates which were cheaper, but anything was better than hire skates which aren't even worth bothering with...

/shrug/ from what I recal basic hockey skates were £65 ish, or a lil cheaper for me as I class as kiddi sizes which are vat free Dance!

I wasn't planning on buying new boots yet, had my sidi 2 years in July, done 30 000 miles in them, wear em all day at college, dead comfy... but an ingrowing toenail caused by boots being too small takes the pish..especially when dog treads on foot.... twice! Crying or Very sad

I'll get them trade price from feridax, about £60 I think mayb more so Sale of skates and old boots will cover new boots. Same again me thinks

I went and spoke to the physio at our on-site gym, who says that he reckons it sounds like groin muscle strain rather than tired legs Razz .

Yes you can, kind of.

I put in a hopeful bid, though I expect they'll go for a lot more than $30. Mr. Green

Solihull Ice rink has a skate shop, my size boots (formerly 5) were £65 for the cheapest hockey skates, then £95, £119 for Risport Figure Skates then there were lots more expensive skates,

bearing in mind size 5 comes under child's size..

unforutnatly now I'm a six which is adult so price goes up a wee bit.(VAT added)

£365 for hockey skate I'd assume would be top of the range and a little pointless for pootling round an Ice rink for fun, If he doesnt get bored of Ice skating (which I did) after a few months he won't loose too much money, or if he loves it and wants to get into Hockey...then perhaps mayb he could splashout on the top of the range skates?
