Don't by one of those bits of tat off ebay. Stamps mean nothing anymore. As long as the pipe doens't say "not for road use" then it could pass an MOT. If the tester thinks its too loud if will fail, but if he thinks its OK it will pass. Its up to them. If you think it might fail get a cheap DB killer or some kind of baffle to fit to the pipe.

Trouble is, if you put that on and you're pulled over for it, you're comitting a far more serious offence than simply having an illegal can.

If your can is illegal it may well still pass the MOT, as long as it doesn't have "not for road use" or "race use only" stamped prominantly on it. It's then at the discretion of the tester, and as long as it isn't offensively loud chances are he'll pass it.

If it is stamped not for road use, stick a label or stickor over it when you put it in. It won't fool the tester, but if he can't see it he'll probably be able to ignore it!

when i took my bandit for its MOT the guy doing the test told me to take my standard can down with me just in case an inspector came along.... never needed it, it was just precaution...
it depends on the garage. Its not worth the risk for them, they could get closed down if found out... but some places will be more helpful than others..

A good bit of advice is speak to bikers in your area and find out the best place to go for your MOT. Go to him for all the work you can't/won't do yourself.

I use the same mechanic for everything all the time, and when it comes to MOT time, I'm told to "Make sure that's sorted before you next ride it". and the ticket is issued.

Some people would say that that isn't safe, but the bike DOES get a very thougher inspection, and any defects are highlighted, he will just give me the rest of the day to get them sorted, and trusts that I will as he sees the bike regularly.

A loud can gets "You're not gonna ride with that on are you? Thought not! It wasn't fitted when you came here was it?"

No, you're not allowed to. Put your own e-mark on it and you're committing an offence. You're better off being stopped for an illegal can.

If there are no markings on it then the Police would need to take the bike and conduct their own testing, which would be time and money, so they won't do it Thumbs Up

My Yoshi can has no markings, the MOT inspector said that it will only fail if it has 'not for road use', 'race only' etc

I got pulled over a couple of years ago on a biker spot check near The Sun Inn at Fewston in North Yorks.
Plod informed me "As I cannot see a visible EU mark on your exhaust then I'll have to do you for a defective exhaust. Evil or Very Mad

Apparrently North Yorks plod DO NOT have a mobile decibel testing machine,so they cant really do you for a noisy exhaust if they cant prove it.................whereas with an EU mark..........................

Just a thought, how many times have you seen plod down on his hands and knees looking for an EU stamp on young Mr Novas bean can exhaust, mebbe we should all ride Buells!!

if its an offense to add a stamp, how about modifying a stamped exhaust, by removing baffles and stuff,

Good point Ratty,I'm running with a Beowulf road legal stamped can with the removeable baffle removed,I wonder if they're switched on enough to look for a baffle?

You don't get points for having a non e-stamped can, it's just a fine, and if he's feeling awkward he can refuse to allow you to ride it further till it's rectified.

It's a different set of regulations, if you're pulled for an illegal can they'll do you using construction and use regulations, it's not deemed to be unroadworthy.
