 |
|
I havent been on the road long (well on motorbikes anyways, rode mountain bikes on the road since I was 13) and I dont consider myself as a perfect rider but there are things that car drivers do that really piss me off and not only that are damn right stupid and dangerous...
take for instance.... dual lane road, traffic lights are red and there is a little traffic built up at the lights so if I can and its safe enough to do so I filter up the middle to the lights and position myself just a little in front of the cars. I have watched countless bikers do this when ive been sat in lane waiting for traffic and now im feeling more confident I have been doing it myself. The problem starts when you get an assholes who thinks its clever to pull off at the same time as me. All I require is 1-2 seconds max to pull away clear of the traffic yet nearly half the time you'll get drivers who decide to pull away and accelerate so they are parallel with my bars and their wing mirrors!!! .
Wtf is this all about?!! Ive come to the conclusion they either think im trying to race them (on a 100cc?!?! come on fs) or they think they just have to get past me cos im gonna be riding at 25-30mph. in a 40. I can recall one situation where i have been riding parallel with 2 cars each side of me all the way up to 40mph for like 100m (ok exaggerated but it felt like it) as I try to get in front in the end I had to back off in fear of causing a major accident cos they just were going to keep on trying to pull in front.. It just happened to me again on the way home just they eventually backed off when they realised im on something a bit quicker than the average putt putt.
I give myself plenty of room to leave the lights (usually if I can a whole bikes length) and I do a lifesaver to whichever drivers lane im going to be crossing over just as the lights are changing. Any other tips or things I should be doing? Obviously wouldnt have this problem if I had a bigger bike, just im on my CBT til I pass my test (roll on payday!)..
seems some people really hate scooter riders. Ive been overtaken at 45mph by a bmw (shouldnt be surprised really) going UPHILL in a 30 literally just before a bend ! WTF is wrong with some people. And they wonder why there is roadrage when you get complete nobheads like this risking our lives everyday ____________________ 04' DT125RE (run-a-bout) // 89' DT125R (rebuilt + supermoto conversion)

The standard practise in my opinion is to pull in behind the car first in line. That way you're not trying to pull ahead of them; starting off level with another car is bad practice, if you're in the same lane. But you can't go ahead of them or you'll go over the line.
Easy solution: Stay behind them.
Not that it makes car drivers clever. On my last lesson prior to my test yesterday, we were going down a dual carriageway and indicated right. We'd been indicating for some time and as he does the instructor pulled out before we did. As he did this, a woman in a Mondeo came roaring past him - he had to pull in very quickly to stop from getting squashed and I had to do the same when I heard him yell and saw the car coming up on me fast. He pulled up alongside her (this happened very close to the roundabout we were turning right at) and had a proper yell at her. If it'd been me, alone, I would've booted her wing mirror straight off. |

Don't know about a twist and go, but my geared 100cc bike (Honda H100, 9 whole horsepower) will beat ANY car across the lights. Soon as the lights change I am off, across the junction and back in lane before the car next to me has even got its handbrake off.
So, you need to use the full acceleration of the bike as soon as the lights change so you get away and back in lane again before the car.
If your bike can't do this or you aren't confident enough yet to do it, you are taking a risk by filtering to the front of a queue like that. It is probably safer not to, might be better to filter up and nose-in between the first and second car in the line.
I would have thought the bike should have enough initial acceleration to get you past and back in lane though. I used to ride a 1960's Honda 50 twist and go and it could do it most places (unless it was an uphill start). ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. Just keep in mind filtering is a grey area in the eyes of the law and it's certainly not a given right so if you have an accident you could be found at fault. There are many court cases where the biker has been found at fault even though the car driver has cut across them.
If you can't welly it and get ahead of the cars then don't put yourself in that position in the first place 'cause your life is worth more than a couple minutes saved by filtering dangerously.
Some good reading here written by an advanced instructor

element, if you have been riding mountain bikes since you were 13 on the road, then you will aprreciate that some car drivers have a superior attitude to smaller vehicles
how many times on a bicycle have you, for instance, had the right of way, and had an oncoming car driver just bully you to the side
Or easily kept pace with rush hour traffic on your highly geared mountain bike just for someone to decide that they simply have to be in front of a bicycle just because.... and arse about trying to overtake, when it gets them nowhere?
I'd recommend the staying one car back method while you get used to it. A r trick I sometimes use, on local lights I know well, which probably isn't recommended, is filter through in neutral, and as you get to the front flick into gear on amber, and away, before they've even got the handbrake off. |

As previously stated,if you can't pull clear of the cars at the front you shouldn't filter there. You should be about 2 car lenghs away before they start moving . No offense to smaller scooters but if I'm in the car and a cyclist/moped rider cuts in front its gonnae piss me off as they tend to hold up traffic on dual carriageways. Stick a bit further back as you prob arn't saving much time by filtering to the front if you cant pull clear of the cars. |

Just been reading your post and the replies: to be honest there are a lot of very good opinions, which i read with interest.
I have been driving for 30 years and riding for 6 months (CBT) on a restricted 125, i have filtered through traffic but only if i am Confident that i can pull away safely and without causing a hindrance to other road users, its all down to consideration, which i know works both ways. i have had ass holes trying to take me on roundabouts, in this case i make myself larger and stick to the middle of the road. "Instead of trying to be curteous and keeping to the left to let faster vehicles pass" But kicking someones vehicle because they piss you off is not the best cause of action. In the theory test the correct answer would be to pull back and let them go.
DO be careful, get a copy of the theory test questions, and practise, practise, practise, you did the right thing by asking advice because not only did you get the benefit but other did also.
happy biking. ____________________ My name is gwyn and i am from wales |

car drivers hate bikers, at least the hate me more cause i am a female i think, i often get guys cutting me up while staring at me (why are they staring have they never seen a girl on a bike?) sometimes i think i am on a ufo the way they stare you out, and i wasnt doing anything wrong to deserve that now.
i get cut up alot by people who cant make up their minds as to which lane they would like to go in, (oh i know just knock the biker chick off to you right there she wont mind while you ram your car into her bike! )
wow, sorry i need to calm down! i do stay calm on roads its when i get off the bike i am raging!
but yes i know how you feel and i imagine you get used to it eventually. ____________________ All the breast.

Well i the space of 15mins on the bike i had 3 car drivers pull right out on me. Sitting at lights they go green, i was not quick of the mark so it was green before i moved and a car/private taxi jumped out of the train station and nearly took me out side on. I got to admit i lost the plot (had my g/f pillion) so i hit the horn hard and went up the side of him, he had his hands in the air to say what, GRR .
Coming up to lights doing just over 30 and starting to slow and a car decides to change lane into mine without indicating. Full beamed him and he did not even bother to put his hand up to say sorry.
Next set of lights i see 2 junkie looking feckers pushing each other on side of road, so lights change and they run on the road in front of me and try and block me, they started shouting shit and sticking their arms out to try and get me off the bike, i hammered it straight at him doing about 60 they soon moved.
All in all a sh!t 15 mins ride in Glasgow. ____________________ Current: 2019 Yamaha T7 -> 2015 KTM Superduke R | 2000 Yamaha R1 Past -> 2009 KTM 990 SM -> 2005 kawasaki ZX10r -> 2000 Honda CBR 600 FY -> 2002 Honda XLV 125 Varadero
