I`ve got a 2001 RS, I`ve owned it since new. The main thing I would say is good quality two stroke and regular servicing. Also making sure the things properly warmed up before riding is essential.

My m8 has one and he told me like all 2s they need to get an engine rebuild every 10k. If you are going to buy one second had get it checked out to see if it has been written off.

They don't all need to be rebuilt every 10k. My NSR is still going strong after 12k, and I don't think it will need doing for a while yet. They can last as long as 20k miles.

The thing with 2 strokes is to vary the revs. Don't hold the throttle open for long amounts of time. Use the gears and vary the engine speed.

two strokes tend to miss-fire at low revs and they eat oil for breakfast so be prepared to replace the oil a lot. the better the oil the better the engine performance apparently aswell (i'm not much of a mechanic) castrel TT is recommended. Thumbs Up

The NSR doesn't make as much bhp as the and IFAIK it runs a bridged exhaust port so it gets an easier life.

Fair point, but the comment was all 2t need to be rebuilt at 10k, which isn't the case.

And by "engine rebuilt" he generally means new piston and rings, possibly barrel. Not a major issue, you see motorcross lads rebuilding their engines in the car park between races.
