shall I take an extended warranty? or shall I just buy two spare radios in case the first one breaks?
https://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/633_242586.html

rip-off..

isn't there a regulation regarding extended warranties not exceeding 50% of the value of the goods in question?

These extended warranties from electrical stores are rarely worth the money. They often charge 30% of the purchase price and most electronic equipment is out of date after 12-24 months anyway and worth less than the price of the warranty. They'd probably swap it out for another repaired one and you could get the same second hand kit cheaper off EBay.

The price of warranty for that radio though, is rediculous! Are they really expecting every radio they sell to fail on average twice in 2 years (you get the first year for free)?

I can get a genuine Kawasaki extended Warranty Plus (to 4 years) for £165 (and you can buy it at any time up to 12 months after purchase).

I don't buy Any extended warranties.. and I'm sure the money I've saved on no warranties will easily cover the cost of anything that breaks.

was just interested/surprised to see this one Smile

The sales people love these as they get a lot of comission basically because extended warranties mean nothing, just get a few extra £££ from the customer. Laughing

I have walked out of electrical stores in the past because of arguments with sales staff over extended warranties. Even up to the point of just needing to put the sale through the till, they just can't help themselves. I would rather order stuff off the web now and not have the hassle. I've even said that I would rather buy an item again new if I had to and they still try.

A favorite lately is that as I work in IT I'm buying it for my job and claiming it back from the company or I work for an assurance company so get free cover. Wink

I can remember having a row with a guy in PC World. He was telling me that I should buy a warranty from him for my Compaq PC.

The PC World warranty was £300 for 3 years. he shut up when I told him I was a re-seller and I could get a 'CarePaq' for only £98+VAT for the same amount of time and that would be next businesss day replacement parts. None of this 'return to base' crap they fob people off with.

If you're wondering why I bought it there, I can't buy 'personal' machines on business accounts, so couldnt slip it through the company to avoid VAT. The business machines didn't have as good deals.

Another thing that bugs me is their finance! 24.5% APR! I nearly passed out!

if it's your company (and you're a Direcotor) then give the company a "directors loan" for the value of the goods, and the company buys the goods, and lends them to you. the nice part of this is, as far as the company is concerned the goods depreciate over time, so in 5 years you "buy" the computer from the company for pennies, and claim your loan back Wink

Guess I'm the only one who thinks they're pretty good.

The iron; £200 and £30 for a 3 year extended warranty. It's died on us 4 times so far, and each time we got the newest model at the closest price, and a new warranty free. Granted, it shouldn't break in the first place, but it's used very heavily.

The food processor, £120, same deal, broken twice (again used very heavily) and again no hassle, just took it back, they swapped it with a similar one, and a fresh warranty.

Both those at Comet, or Currys, don't know.

Richer Sounds - they must have the best. £30 for a 3 year warranty, use it as often as you need, but if you don't, they give you your money back at the end of the 3 years. I consider that damn good, and worth the investment, especially when it comes to a £170 DVD recorder which will more than likely break at some stage.

^^^Thats fair enough, but I reckon its the exception to the rule. The richter Sound one sounds like a fair deal though.

I wouldn't take out a warranty on a radio that costs £18 tho Laughing

indeed...

I took it out for my Sagem 27" HD LCD TV, as the Richer Sounds warranty is one of the Few that covers dead pixels on LCD screens.

I took a seperate insurance out on my ipod video.

£220 for iPod
£60 for 3 year insurance

I'm covered for everything. Get a new iPod straight away. But the main reason I took the insurance out is because if they dont make the video iPod anymore I get the newest model out. So in 3 years I'm going to throw my Video iPod off the nearest bridge, pick up the pieces and exchange it for the new Video - Camera - Internet - Coffee - Maker - iPod.

£200 for an Iron?!?!

My current one was about £4 in Tesco's, and I don't think I've spent more than £45 on them in my life! Never had one break down on me either, I just can't be bothered to clean them, or I lose them.
