Sainsbury's - Jobs worths !! LONG STORY

I went to fill up today at the local Sainsbury and the silly mare behind the till decided to switch off the pump after I'd already put £4 in the tank.
I was sitting on the bike as I always do to keep it upright so I can brim it. Then the other attendant came out and told me to get off my bike as they are not allowed to authorise the pump if I sit on it, although they couldn't tell me why.
I explained nicely that as the bike has a side stand it leans over so you can't brim it, hence why I needed the bike upright and said jokingley to the lad you best hold the bike for me while I fill it up, which to my amazement he did !!

Anyway I then went in all wrapped up and warm still in my gear and she then tried to tell me to remove my helmet too !!! the garage was busy so there was a massive queue, I refused telling her with my balaclava and scalf it'll take me 5 minutes to get kitted up again so I suggested she get off her high horse take my money and I'll get out of her hair and on my way. She still refused to take payment, so I asked to speak to her manager, she refused so I told her to get her head out of her backside and promptly left without paying, much to the amusement of the people in the queue and a small round of applause !!! I felt bloody great as I blasted off in disgust.

I got back to work and an hour later I had a phone call from the local nick, who had got my phone number from the wife after tracing my details from the DVLA. I explained the situation and they asked me if I would come into the station to give a statement, I explained that obviously I was happy to assist but was at work so it was not convienient, so they agreed to send a panda round later in the afternoon.

About 4 o'clock a pair of nice WPC's turned up and I spent 20 minutes explaining what had gone on at the petrol station and made the point I had offered to pay but that the attendant had refused to accept my payment and this can be backed up by the CCTV footage. The WPC told me that Sainsbury's had reported me for doing a runner but she would consult with her senior officer and duty lawyer regarding my statement and ask Sainsburys for a copy of the video footage to corroborate my story as I clearly offered my card to the attendant. The WPC said that off the record she thought that technically by refusing to accept payment that I was not guilty of theft and other than she thought I was a bit rash in my actions, told me not to worry and will ring me tomorrow with an update.

I'm going to fight these f'kers if they try to press charges it made my blood boil !!!

I get fed up with those prissy 'you must remove your helmet' rules.

I make a point of taking it off along with gloves and my bag to get my wallet out. I then make a point of putting it all back on before walking away from the counter. It's not really as if I'm going to rob them, my bloody bike is on the forecourt with the reg plate on full view!

Sheesh!

Thats' terrible customer service, I hope Sainsburys get a telling off from plod about this. It's a joke!

i hope that no charges are pressed and well done for standing up for yourself, if sainsbury's gets arsy about it i would write a letter to the manager explaining why and all your biking friends are going to boycott thenm speak in the language that they understand! MONEY!

Mike, you cant be done for theft as you have not been dishonest. The theft act says you must dishonestly obtain property with the intention of permanently depriving them of it.

I used to work in a sainsburys petrol station. The sitting on teh bike thing is so you dont spill fuel over yourself. We never bothered with it.
Not taking your lid off is just plain rude! Mine always comes off even if i'm wrapped up with plugs in and specs on.

Its rude in the same way turning away from someone when the speak is rude. When you go someware the requires verbal comunication you should show your face!

Theft = To dishonestly appropriate good belonging to another with the intention of permanantly depriving the other of it.

As VTR SP1 says, there was NO dishonesty, there was NO guilty knowledge of any crime..............you offered, they refused,, BONUS!

I can't see the problem with keeping a helmet on while paying for fuel, I mean if you've gone into the garage after fuelling its not like you're doing a runner, is it? You're actually coming in to pay for it, not the opposite.

And the amount of time it would save is better if the garage is busy anyway.

I don't have this problem as my local garage knows me anyway. Never had the problem anywhere else either come to think of it. Although never filled up at a Sainsburys.

Hi,

You will be fine if you offered to pay. It can be pain so I usually use the pay at pump options.

Whislt the rules seam daft I cant see whay the cant resfuse to server you if you dont remove your helmet (their store their rules) but after they have dispensed the petrol its bit late !
