well after having found out I'm classed as "marginally overweight" I bit the bullet and decided to do something about it.

so after spending last night fitting my XC SPD pedals, and replacing the heavy, bombproof DH tyres with some tiny, skinny, superlight road ones, I cycled into work this morning.

21 miles Shocked

took a little over an hour and a half.. which well exceeded my
expectations; I was expecting it to take about 2 hrs. After about 1/2 way, I found it less and less hard work, and evetually got into my stride just as I was nearing cambridge. Felt like I was never off the bike by the time I got here (i used to cycle shitloads, and thought nothing of 60 mile jaunts for the hell of it. Not been cycling proper for about 4 years tho.)

took me another 10 minutes to get changed, and thaw out my toes, mind... but other than that, i feel fine.

I do have that funny walk where your feet still want to move in little circles tho Very Happy

biggest frustration? getting about 1/2 way in, and going for a drink only to find all the water in the tube of the camelback had frozen solid. got some lovely frost on my hat, gloves, and bike too.

Blimey, well done! Shocked

Not just the distance either but the getting up early, working a days graft and then doing it back home is a massive effort, you'll be trim in no time!

Thumbs Up

thanks for the Thumbs Up peeps..

I've just checked up on the calorie burn calculator, and it looks like I've burnt about 1000 calories Neutral

spose, that's 2000 each day I cycle in tho. (sounds a LOT)

the recommended daily intake for a bloke is about 2300 to maintain a steady weight, it should have an impact soon.

Yeah, if you are a bit of a fat lad you could put strain on your under-used heart and it will stop.

Good luck Wink Thumbs Up

I'm not "fat" I'm marginally overweight.

5'8" tall, 12 1/2 stone, but finding 32" waist a bit tight now, and having seen pics of me whenh I was in my early 20's gave me a shock as I hadn't realised how much bigger the old belly is.

I'll be okay I reckon.

but at burning off 2000 calories a day, I'd beter start eating MORE Very Happy

For sure, I'm no nutritionist but when I was trying to put on weight I was working out every day and my target calorie intake was about 3000-3500 a day.

Different end of the scale but to make sure you don't feeling i'll/waste muscle mass you'd best be aiming fora similar amount to loose weight (high protein as you're exercising large muscle groups and loads of oats etc.)

Nice one feef. Thumbs Up

If you are seriously looking at doing that to and from work every day you will definitely need to eat more, otherwise you'll have a body like a coatrack in no time at all.

Hey, thats really good!

I have just started to get myself fit aswell. Started the weight training and the jogging. (Hopefully after a while I will go back to Thai Boxing aswell...when I am a little fitter though Laughing)

After doing the exercise you just feel really good with yourself! Cool

I think you should take that as a sign that it's far too cold at the moment to be out cycling early. Razz

Probably shouldn't be using reason like that for not cycling much at the moment but I'll worry about that when London > Brighton is closer.

some of the best rides I had back up in Scotland were in Feb, on froze ground. nothing like it for making fast progress when off-road Smile

bloody hurts when you fall off.

I was actually a bit sweaty when I got in.. was only wearing a base layer, thin fleece, cycling jersey and windproof cycling jacket.

legs were long johns, bib shorts and thermal cycling leggings.

worse parts were toes, as I said.. my cycling shoes are rather well vented around the front Neutral

think some gaffa tape will sort that in the meantime.

I'll stay with jeans & waterproof trousers and just be cold.

Snow is fun but other than that I dislike anything to do with winter, I'm a southerner after all.

You know that doing that much wont make you loose wieght dont you? Assuming you eat at the level required to keep your energy up. You'll merely put on more muscle as I'm sure your aware.

From what I've read BMI isnt really worth the paper it's written on. It doesnt take into account any factor's such as bone structure (large, average, small etc) or the amount of exercise you do. Most if not all rugby player's would be considered overweight if not obese for instance, even though theyre very fit and healthy.

EDIT: Make sure you dont lean too far round corner's as your pedal dog's in and you get flung off as I did earlier. Laughing Crying or Very sad

a total of 3 hrs of aerobic exercise will help lose weight.

if the energy expended is more than the energy in, and the energy in comes from a properly balancd diet, then it will help.

no muscle mass will be built for at least 12 weeks, as until then, despite feeling fitter, the body is just getting more used to the exercise, and becomeing more efficient at it, and not actually increeasing muscle mass. Equally, long bouts of aerobic exercise won't build muscle like short, repetitive bouts of anaerobic, resistance exercise.

my goal is 69kg by june.

from Wilmore & Costill, Physiology of Sport and Exercise :
Quote:
physical training can substantially alter body composition. Many people have believed that physical activity has only limited influence on changing body compositionm and that even vigerous exercise burns too fw calories to lead to substiantial body fat reductins. Yet research has conclusivley demonstrated the effectiveness of exercise training in promoting major alterations in body composition..
.. most studies have found simila trends [ with regards to exercise's effect on bosy composition]
-total weight decreases
-fat mass and relative body fat decrease
-fat-free mass is either maintained or increases
..
But to maxiise losses in body weight and body fat, it is necessary to cobine exercise with decreased calorific intake.

If this ever happens whilst you are on your way home, there is a pretty easy solution... Pull in at the nearest pub and get a few pints down you Thumbs Up I was cycling to work up until November when I wussed out and started using the motorbike. I do miss stopping off at the pub, though it gets a bit expensive when you start doing it everyday (15 pints a week, not including anything drank at the weekends or evenings Shocked)

It's surprising how much windchill your fingers are exposed to on a push bike... I was wearing my bike gloves for cycling in, and my fingers tips were just as cold on frosty mornings as when I wear those gloves on the motorbike.

when we used to jog quite abit to get fit they say every so often you should dart at full pace as fast as you can go for approx 5-10 seconds then slow it down back to a normal jogging pace and just do that every so often. Maybe give that a go but on the bike every 6-7 minutes.
