After years of riding twist and go bikes, i got a proper bike as people tell me. Got a yamaha tw125. Yes, the thing with the silly big back wheel. However, it's got a choke. Being new to this concept and about as technically minded as a spoon, i was wondering when i should use it. How long i should leave it on?Push it back in when i set off? What? Ta ....

You should use your choke pretty much every time you start your bike for the first time that day.

Each bike vari's on my RS125 I leave the choke on for about 30 seconds, then drop it to half of the choke for a minute or 2 then off completely. After I have turned the choke off i give it a good rev up to about 6/7000 rpm to clear the throat so to speak.

I would advise you spend a little while getting used to your engine sounds on a morning, start it using the choke, then when you hear the engine over revving you have left the choke on too long so you need to work out a point good for the bike inbetween starting it and that point!

It also depends on how cold it is, when its blooming freezing and middle of winter etc then I have been known to spend 20 minutes warming my engine, with the choke been on for 5 minutes +

Put the choke on fully and start the bike. I usually then ride off, knocking the choke off a hundred yards or so down the road. Take it easy with the throttle for the first five minutes or so until the engine has warmed up properly.

I use the choke to start the bike if it cuts out without the choke being used, let it idle for a couple of minutes then choke off and make sure the bike runs fine without it being on. I don't think you will do any physical damage if you leave it on by accident but your fuel will disappear quicker.

I like those.

I had one for about 18 months. It was a nice little bike, unexciting to some extent but undemanding to ride around London ... and it took me all sorts of other places perfectly efficiently. Until some chav scum kids nicked it, rode it around East London until it ran out of gas and then set fire to it.

Broke my heart, that did. I loved that little bike.

You'll learn after a few times Thumbs Up

Like everybody has already said, use the choke on full when starting from cold. The amount needed to start the bike during the summer or after a run will vary.

My ZXR revs to 4000rpm on full choke, after a minute it drops to 2000rpm and ready to ride. Just before I ride, I make sure that the throttle responds when blipped, knock of the remianing choke when down the road and riding steadily.
