I was on my way to work last week and had gone about a mile when, stopped at the Billett roundabout in Walthamstow, I heard a car behind me sounding his horn. I checked the traffic lights, which were still red so ignored him. Then he done it again so I looked round to see him pointing at the bike, specifically the side-stand, which I had forgotten to raise. I had somehow managed to get as far as I had without doing myself a serious injury. I don't know if I was embarrassed, relieved or a mix of both. A lucky escape.

I thought bikes would have a kill switch if the stand was down and the engine running, sounds very lucky though as that could have been nasty Shocked

Yes it was a lucky escape Shocked Could have done some serious damage if you'd tried to GYKD Laughing Wink

I'd hope it's just down to inexperience???

I remember when I first started riding, getting on the bike 1st thing one morning and getting frustrated that the CG started up then within seconds spluttered to a halt... then it wouldn't fire up at all.
I had visions of having to wheel it thru the city centre back to the bike shop, before I realised I hadn't turned the fuel tap on Doh!

Some do. They have a switch thing where you can't start the bike unless the sidestand is up. But not all.

How lovely it is to suddenly take off and feel that crunching and scraping as you realise you didn't put it up Shocked Not. Laughing Don't fret, kid. We've all done it. Tried taking off without removing your wheel locks yet?

I've just got myself a disc lock but it comes with a tag for the ignition which is supposed to remind you the lock is on.

Yes, I reckon that's it. I've only been riding about 6 weeks so I'll put it down to inexperience, and good luck that I'm here to write about it.

At least you didn't do what I usually do and give the car driver a load of abuse cos I thought he was just being a tw*t. Now that is embarassing Embarassed

I have not done that but I went to a go karting track and locked my bike up with a big chain, sat on it, pulled off and before i realised what i had done bent several of my spokes on my front wheel!! Embarassed

On my CBT I was learning on my brand spanking new Suzuki VL Intruder 125, it was straight from the showroom and we all went out together to start the practical learning, i was on my VL and all the others were on VanVans and i felt all smug as I think they are terrible bikes, who drops his bike on the first turn round the small circuit they put us on?? Embarassed

Hahaha *Doh*

Oh well that was 2 years ago, and now im keeping up with the best.

unfortunately yes! Embarassed in front of a busy crowd outside my college as well, forgot to take a huge chucky chain off, only on a 50 luckily so my scooter just wouldn't move, lucky i didn't do damage to my bike! Laughing

My new bike doesn't have a side stand cut out switch like my old one and I too keep forgetting to flick it up.
My only reminder is when I lean the bike and I hear the side stand scrape along the road. Embarassed

Most bikes will cut off, but i have seen it happen with Yamaha Fazers for some reason. You are lucky if you hit a bend with that down you could be in all kinds of trouble.

When my sidestand switch was disconnected I rode off with it down twice. Just flicked up when it touched the ground so didn't have a problem.
