Hi, are the commands heard via the headsets for telling you to turn left/right etc the same as when you do it on CBT? What is the command for "pull in and stop" for when he wants you to do the U-turn exercise?
many thanks Smile

He'll say stuff like "At the next junction I'd like you to turn left" or "At the next set of lights, turn right"

As for stopping I think it was something like "Pull over and stop when it is safe to do so".

Either way, you'll know what he means.

Many Thanks Joe! I asked this question as the place where i did my CBT had this funny radio system, where it was voice activated and so they just repeated themselves by saying "left left left left" for example, until the radio "realised" someone was talking into it. it was awful-couldnt hear a thing. So i take by this the examiners headset is different?
thanks

The examiners radio will be clear unlike the ones most use for training.

They also might ask you to turn at the next turning, but the next turning might be the wrongway so you would have to take the next avalible one, requires a little thinking if he does ask this.

They might also ask you at roundabouts to take the 5th exit instead of saying take the 3rd left, he did that with me & i had to quickly count the exits lol.

You'll be fine, the headsets work.

Examiners are trained to be totally dead-pan so don't be put off by that. Their instructions are 'fixed' and pretty unambiguous.

Just beware of them saying "At the next available junction, turn right.". That 'available' means one you can legally turn right into, watch for no-right turn signs or no-entrys.

Going the wrong way or failing to turn off when they say is not a fail, if you are not happy that you can safely carry out a manouver you think they have asked, don't.

Definately don't do what someone did two days before I took my car test and turn down the off-slip to a dual carriageway when they were told to turn right. If it looks dangerous or silly, it isn't what they wanted.

As I recall, the instructions take the form of things like:

At the end of the road, turn left.

At the roundabout, take the third exit.

At the next available junction, turn right.

When it is safe to do so, pull in to the side of the road and stop.

Turn off your engine and dismount.

Place the bike on its stand.

When you are ready, push the bike through a turn in the road so you are facing in the opposite direction.

When it is safe to do so, move off.

Not absolutely gospel, but that is the sort of thing. They will explain any exercises (like the emergency stop) before you are asked to do them.

I would not worry about the voice coms as much, he/she will give you plenty of warning. One thing i would say if he asks you to pull over at a safe place and stop, that does not mean stop outside someones drive way. He will ask you to stop on a hill then drive away when safe to do so (remember to check mirrors and lifesaver before you move off).

The examiner will give clear in plenty of time instructions, the radio they use are of high quality, better than my instructors had, I too had the fear of not being able to hear him and understand the instructions but needn't of. For the U turn and ES he was out of the car and actually stood by me talking to me.
We did come to one junction at traffic lights where you could only go left or right and he hadnt told me which direction in which to go so I had to look back at him and ask by hand signals! He did apologise for that error Laughing

My examiner was as cold as ice when talking on the walkie talkie, nice as pie when off the bike. He didn't talk unless giving commands so cold is better, its not personal.

The E stop, pull aways and the U turn are in your time, and they will tell you that.
