First things first, The bike only goes as fast as you make it go. Theres no need to blast through the gears- throttle control is the best way to keep a steady speed.

I reccomend "Short shifting" as the best way to keep a decent speed and keep in a usable rev range, You've probably already done it numerous times but havent thought about it.

You dont have to reach the top end of a gear before shifting, you can shift up at any time during the gear(obviously not too early or at slow speed as this will cause a stall).

I find this the best way to keep a sensible speed around town without it revving at a stupid rate, Although its not very often I short shift Laughing .

Also dont worry about redlining the engine, As a sportsbike Honda would of built the engine in mind of being revved hard a lot so you could redline it in most gears and anyway a good blast on the throttle everynow and then only keeps the engine sweet Very Happy .

Glad I could help mate. The reason you say the engine roars at around 7k is probably because its enetering the power band and the revs will pick up much faster than through the lower half of the gear.

Im not familiar with what you bike redlines at but it will be fine to redline the engine in those gears you stated, Obviously dont do it every time you accelerate just when you need to as theres no point in putting extra strain on the engine, chain and sprockets unessecarily.

Basically its upto you how hard you push the engine but I wouldnt encourage ragging it all the time, The majority yes Wink but give it time to rest to.

Just be sensible and you and the bike will be fine, You will soon learn how hard you can push the engine and start to feel more comfortable in you riding.

Take it easy, and enjoy!! Thumbs Up

If its anything like my RS then it will lift no matter what u do ( apart from going slow of course... )

Basicly the powerband kicks in at a certain ammount of revs, on mine its around 7k rpm, sounds like the same on urs. Its just the sudden bit of power you recieve and the type of suspension bikes use that makes it lift, nothing to worrie about ( of course u dont want to be pulling wheelies everywhere and falling off... )

I rember the first week I got my RS125, I really did think I would give any 1000cc a race for its money up to 60mph! Untill I actually sat behind one at the lights and he gunned it.... Still I beat an M3 off the lights and he was gunning it so im happy with it Very Happy

I used to have an NS125R with a micron expansion chamber. It was exactly as you describe. The top speed was 90mph (indicated) but it got into a scary weave at around 80mph.

But it did wheelie when coming into the powerband in first and second... Twisted Evil

In answer to your original question... change gear when you feel comfortable!

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

meh, let it run into the red every now and then. My bike has a rev limiter at 11500RPM so i don't have to worry too much about lunching it. Extend the change point to 10,000 and see how it feels, the later you change, the earlier you'll get into the powerband in the next gear.
