Seen an nsr locally for sale and if the price is right I might buy it, ride it a few months before taking my full licence, then buy a bigger bike and rebuild the nsr.

The bike has done 27k on 92' plate... has had 7 owners (hmm...) and is an import. I got a feeling I can pick it up cheap but are there any general faults/probs to look out for?

anyone? Im gonna go out and see the guy who owns the bike soon and I dont have a fecking clue about NSR's.. Ive a mate who reckons they are a bit long and dont corner well. He used to have an RD125 and recommended me either the Mito or the RS but I dont want either. (mito=expensive / RS=Long waiting times on spares).

Ive looked around on the net for general faults that these pick up (like on my speedfight they are known to fuckup on the kickstart, cheap plastics etc) but I cant find nothing. I dont fancy buying a dog!

As groove says you should definately find out about the engine that high a mileage you should be looking at atleast 2 engine rebuilds, service history and receipts are always a good thing aswell.

I would check the frame and engine numbers match the v5, check that the bike starts up fine, ohonr ahead and ask them not to start it up so you can see if it starts up cold properly.

Find out if its been derestricted, find out what happened to the body work, that bike should have fairings so i presume it may have been dropped, so check for scratches on the frame and the usual dents etc in the tank.

Also don't go there to buy it, go there to see it as i am sure there are better examples of NSR's about.

Im after a cheap bike and this is ideal. Im taking my full licence within the next few months and I just want something reasonably quick to learn gears on and then after a few months of passing my test and having gained experience on the nsr i'l buy a bigger bike then fully rebuild+respray the nsr to pass on to my brother. And anyhow if I had £1500 right now I wouldnt buy a nsr id buy a vfr 400 or something ready to use the day I pass my test :p

were are the frame/engine numbers located?

Looks a nice little bike. There's no point in buying a expensive 125. Your only learning so you wouldn't want the expense of replacing smashed fairings when you drop it in McDonalds car park.

It has been dropped so check that the forks and frame aren't bent. I wouldn't worry too much about the engine. It will blow at some point but that could be anytime. He says he has receipts of £500 for new pistons. Not sure what he means by this cos they only have one. Check there are no nasty noises from it and that it pulls smoothly. If it does blow a new engine can be had fairly cheaply.

All 125 bikes are a bit of a gamble as they've all been owned by novice riders. I do think that your doing the right thing in buying a cheap one.
Good luck Thumbs Up

i thought £500 for a piston replacement was way off. Maybe had a a bigger piston+rebore? Il find out when I go see the seller. Still would like to know where that figure came from though.

My advice is buy an NSR thats cosmetically challenged, but mechanically sound. I paid a fortune for a spotless NSR, only to knock £100's of the resale value the minute I came of at 5mph. Despite the scapes my bike still rides exactly the same, so anyone who buys it is going to get a very well cared for mechanically sound bike, at a bargain price.

Just make sure that the bike you buy has only been dropped / scraped, and not rode into a tree. Thumbs Up
