Must be ill or something but I feel like driving a car….

So, BSM, looking at what they charge for driving a shi* car around a few streets makes me think I’m in the wrong job. But do I go for these people because of the price? Or do I go for private tuition?

I can’t, and won’t go in the car with my old man, I’ll end up crashes the car on purpose.

Timing sucks though. Bike for winter, car for summer? Trust you to be different Wink

Most places are as good or bad as each other, in my experience. Do you know anyone locally who's used a school and can recommend or put you off one in particular? If not, I'd probably just go for the cheapest.

Being able to go out in your dads car (or anyones) is very useful, and much cheaper. I didn't start having "extra lessons" in my mums car until I'd had about 10 driving school lessons or so. Does make a massive difference to have the extra time between your actual lessons. If you think your dad will wind you up in the car (mine did), then find someone else to sit there or who has a car they'll let you practice in. My mum was good at not shouting at me, and my grandad used to sleep in the passenger seat and just let me get on with it. Insurance isn't that bad to add a learner driver on to an existing policy either.

I got told that as a rough/general rule, you need 1 lesson for each year of your life, plus 5 to be ready for your test. Multiply that by what, £25/lesson? Very expensive. As will be getting a car at the end of it all. It will use more petrol, tax disc is dearer, insurance costs, MOT, servicing etc.

You must be pretty used to the roads by now though, so it should just be a case of learning the different controls. Oh, and the added braking distance..... And lack of acceleration........ And the need for a MUCH bigger gap when pulling into a line of traffic...... And sitting in traffic rather than going past it...... And getting weird looks from bikers when still you nod at them.....

Car licence would still be a very handy thing to have, with or without a car. You might even be able to blag a pool car from work or something, and become the Vectra-driving, sandwich-deal-buying man you hate so much. Laughing

Go for a smaller place; they're interested in keeping a good reputation as it's their one man band. But an employee at BSM doesn't give a crap how he comes across, as long as it's not so bad he gets complaints about him sent to Head Office.

I used a guy in fleet who was really good, over 40 years experience, bit more expensive though. Got my up to test standard in about 8 lessons but couldnt get a test for another 6 weeks so in the mean time decided to take more lessons. Had 20 overall and passed first time in SLOUGH!!!! with like 1 minor.

Expensive but worth not getting cold/wet every morning and keeping my hair nice Shifty

My brother used to work for BSM, they are basically a franchise. They charge or used to charge around £1500 - £1800 for training and advanced test then rent you a car. They provide so many customers with which they take a percentage of the per hourly rate. It is in there interested to take as many £1500 - £1800's as they can get and have drivers on the road earning them their percentage. My brother was the only successful candidate to pass his test before being put out on the road in a BSM car. You can tell those whom have passed from those who haven't from the instructor sticker they display in their windscreen. If I remember correctly a green octagon is a fully qualified instructor. It's interesting how many pink badges you see when you look for them.

Those BSM prices are ridiculous. My test was more or less exactly 10 years ago, and I paid £135 for 10 x 1 hour lessons (£15 each, one free if you booked 10).

There's no way that learning to drive should cost a four-figure sum. Unless you're female. Wink Laughing

Don't go to big companies with lots of overheads. Do your lessons with someone who only does evenings and weekends locally, chances are they'll be a better instructor and they will be about half the price.

Go with a local independant. As mentioned large franchises use trainee instructors, where as independants must be fully qualified.
Look for an ADI instructor and you should find they are a bit cheaper as they dont have the additional franchise fees to pay.

All instructors are regularly tested for competance and the best ones will reach the stage where they are only tested about once every 5 years.
