Wealth vs happiness?


A thread semi inspired by the looks or IQ thread a few months ago
I'm just curious as I've been offered a biz opportunity which looks very
promising and hits a niche market which nobody else seems able to
fill.


However doing a 9-6ish (not quite if anybody reads never ending work
and the following never ending work revisited threads) , has allowed me
to make a large number of friends and go on 2-3 ride outs a week , such that
I feel quite happy and want to return to that part of the country though this
means I can't do the biz oop north.

Anybody else have thoughts on this ? ,what is more important to you?
wealth or happiness (using a hypothetical you can't have both).

It's something of a misleading question, as for most of us money is a contributing factor towards our happiness.

Since my crash I've had to face some tough questions re. my future life and career, and have come to the conclusion I'm stuck in a rut and not getting the most out of life.

Its definitely something we should all consider every so often, to make sure we've not lost our way.

I think a mix of both is the best.

Live a happy life affording to do what you want to comfortably which is what i/my family is like at the moment.

I wouldn't like to be mega rich because then after a while there's no fun of getting excited to do things. It will just be a case of oh i want that ferrari or which island should i vist today.

Plus people use you if you have loads of wedge.

A good balance is needed and the amount of money is relative.
I am a lot happier now than I was when I had no money a few years ago.
I am not 'rich' now but I don't have to worry about running out every month and I have no debt.
Previously I was always hell-bent on becoming very rich, but now I have 'enough' I'm a bit more relaxed.
Money gives you freedom to for example own a bike, travel/holiday and a basic feeling of security which is important for happiness.
Having a lack of money means anxiety and hardship.
My main motivation now is to find a job that I find enjoyable. My focus is more on a basic minimum that I would need to be 'happy' rather than a greed for more and more money.

I have no debt, a Mc Job part time, a uni course full time, a fantastic boyfriend, and a loving family. We've always been poor, up until I hit my teens, so I'm used to not having money around. I love a spending spree, but I don't have expensive taste and I prefer a walk along the beach to eating at an expensive restaurant.
I said (just before my grand dad died last month) that I thought my life was perfect. it's my birthday this month, an there's very little I actually want for it. Sure, I'll get couple hundred quid, but i'll just blow it on silly things for lack of something I actually *need*.
Besides having the loved ones who have died in my life alive again, there's nothing my life is lacking, and I earn £5.30 an hour working 3 days a week. I'm hardly rich, but I'm so happy with my life. Can't imagine cash improving what's already perfect.

People seem to forget that no, money doesn't buy you happiness... But it buys you opportunity, which is a valuable thing many people don't have.

Lack of money can be a catalyst for depression and stress, so having enough money could be seen as a way of being happy.

That being said, no one ever has enough money!

I'm working long hours at the moment, I took the job for the financial security it bought. I get a good salary, but have no time to use my new found wealth! I dream of going home at 5pm, or working a four day week.

Having watched "About a Boy" (again, for the 27th time )last night I believe that Hugh Grant presented a very strong case for the "money can't buy you happiness" argument.

Happiness.

Remember money is just a system set up by human's to trade with each other, I obviously realise you now need money to live in the world we are in.

You said your sister beleive's she has nothing to show for her time. She is very wrong. Everything that she has to show for it is inside her head, now part of her. It possibly changed her character, or her perception of things etc. It most certainly will have added to what she has experienced and learnt.

When she dies all of those things she may have "to show for" her life will be gone, along with all those memories and experiences.

Which would you prefer to have on your deathbed. More memories or more innanimate objects?

Edit: before any pedantic person incapable of reading between the lines post's, I realise to have some of those experiences it requires money.

Perhap's the answer, like with most thing's, is just to try it.

If you do not enjoy the extra money and time consuming job then you simply change to one that revert's back to a system that suit's you.

It is an experience and will give you memory's to try it, so I'll stick with the happiness answer.

If you have true happiness, then money will be irrelevent. If you are happy then by the very definition you will have everything you want/need.

our pursuit of money is just to help us pursue happiness

I am soon gonna be getting a big heap of money but the rest of my life is a bit of a mess which makes me a bit unhappy.

The big heap of money will give me all sorts of options and choices to sort my life out if I make the effort to use it wisely.

If I sit on it and dont use it, or waste it, then it wont make me happy.

Money is potential happiness, but it doesnt guarantee it.

However unhappiness can be a good thing. It can drive us to improve our lot. If you are happy and content with what you have, there is no need to make the effort to improve your situation. This can then lead to unhappiness if the situation deteriates and you have missed the chance to improve it.

Buddists try to remove their desires and get inner contentment by ignoring their natural instincts to improve their situation. I dont think thats very healthy. If you are unhappy about something, thats the first step to changing it and making it better. Everything can be improved.
