My sister just got her first car the other day. Anyway the tax has just run out. The problem is we want to get it taxed but the car has to be insured. My sister isn't 17 until may 1st so apparently can't be taxed until then.

Is there any way round like a day cover note?? I thought about aquiring an insurance certificate from the pc but suspect if you got caught with that then you would be in pretty big trouble.

Car just needs to be insured, a cover note will suffice.

DO NOT try to fake one. You could find yourself in some serious trouble.

If you got caught then you'd be in plently of trouble, but as long as it looks good enough to fool the old lady at the post office then you'll be fine.

I'm not encouraging you to do that, its just an option that I hear could work. Razz

Or you could insure yourself on the car for a month and tax it. It doesnt matter who's insuring the vehicle, as long as there's valid insurance for the car, and it has a current MOT you'll be fine.

Unless your thinking it will be covered 3rd party on their existing insurance from their own car. It won't. The car will need a policy of it's own before this rule will apply.

Have her as a second name on the insurance policy.

I had my car all ready for me to drive, i.e. insured, taxed, registered in my name all before I was 17. I can't remember there being a problem with that.

To get tax someone will have to get a valid insurance certificate for the vehicle that needs tax.

Just realised the V5 will be in her name.

SORN it, as no one can drive it anyway. You have to be the registered keeper to insure a vehicle for you to use.

As mentioned, this rule ONLY applies if the vehicle is already insured by the owner.

I'd check that, usually you can only drive the car on your 3rd party insurance if the vehicle is already insured.

She wants to build up her no claims so doesn't want to be a named driver.

Looks like it will be declared off road for a while.

It depends on the policy as to if the vehicle has to already be insured or not.

If you don't want to print out a DIY insurance certificate then you'll have to buy one in order to get tax.

I've always had the question 'Are you the registered keeper of the vehicle?' and know people who have been denied insurance on these grounds.

I'm sure, I've been insured on bikes that weren't mine and the insurance company knew that I wasn't the owner or registered keeper.

Why get fully comp on a (reasonably) worthless car?

Check out your local building society.
My friend's policy was quite expensive from hers, but after her first year they awarded her with two years ncb. Which dramatically reduced her second years' insurance Thumbs Up

I don't think £700 is that bad a quote. I'm sure my first year of insurance on a 903cc Seat Marbella was around £500...

At the age of 21, when I bought my first car (I'd had my licence for 4 years, and I'd had a bike for 2 of them) my 1st years car insurance was £1200.

Was a 3 year old 1.8 Vectra.

£700 for your first years insurance really isn't that bad.

It's wasn't cheap. Plus fully comp was an extra £300 so worth it incase anything happens.

Likewise, my first car was when I was 17, and was a 15yr old, 1.0l VW Polo. The car itself cost £300, and third party only insurance was £500 a year. No i mean on my car i can change into second at like 2,5000 revs. I tried it in her car and it juddered and stalled as you have to rev it more.
