Spitfire....I know you probbaly don't quite understand what Classical and Archaeological Studies is, so I'll tell you. Basically you study ancient languages such as Latin and Greek, learn Roman, Greek, Egyptian and Frankish history, study ancient literature (eg Plutarch and Plato) and learn techniques on how to excavate and date ancient sites and materials. Not your avergae piece-of-shit degree, J R R Tolkien had a degree in it so I've heard, as had JK Rowling and other people. So, no, it's not a 'Mc Donalds' degree as you so mentioned earlier, actually I intend to lecture/teach Classical hisotry and possibly write a few books on it if I get the time or develop my own theories.
Herbaldayz, my managers are Andi, Claire and Justin. I live in Ramsgate and work at the Margate one Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays to bring a bit of money in. Dunno any Nathans I'm afraid.
The hygiene at Mc donalds is ludicrous. You have to wash your hands every half hour, you wear hairnets etc. if you were caught spitting in a burger, Paul crokcer would probably haul your ass into court and sue you for profesisonal misconduct or something or other. Toilets are checked every 10-15 minutes, I should know 'cause I get to do it. Really interferes with whatever else I'm doing.
I agree with what you've said about mouthy kids, more often than not you'l get a gobby answer if you ask them nicely 'cause they're trying to look cool in front of their mates. At that point, I casually mention the CCTV and the fact I don't mind calling the police to get them removed that way. Interesting how scared 'hard' chavs get when you mention the P word Smile

When was that? Razz
I know loadsa people who are doing English Literature. Anyways, I'm specialising in Ancient history next year because I want to teach it. Used to want to be an archaeologist, but I'm clumsy (whoops, there goes that 7th century BC Greek Amphora!) lazy, have a short attention span, and don't much like the heat. Unless they built pyramids in Iceland, then fucked if I'm going to poke around in any Smile

Fair enough, and you're right to stand up for yourself, your kids, or whoever. I agree with COLINWALL though, in that violence, or even just the threat, is not necessarily the best way to go.

This seems like the better way to do it. Don't get me wrong, I'm all up for slapping the shit out of mouthy kids. Just wonder how you'd feel if your lad came home in a few years after he'd mouthed off at a random bloke, who'd given him a slap or two. Or if the mouthy kids with nothing better to do might follow you out. I don't want to have the fear that one of them might fuck with my bike or something.

Also don't think you necessarily need to have kids of your own to understand why parents don't want them to hear swearing.

xlizx, good to see someone who is actually going for a degree that is relevant to what you want to do. I had a friend who studied archaeology at Exeter, and she was one of the only ones who thoruoghly enjoyed every moment. All my mates doing "business" or some such generic thing, had times where they wanted to jack it all in. Good luck Thumbs Up

Re vera, cara mea, mea nil refert..

Seriously though, I had about 5 really close mates that all went to do Archaeology about 3 years ago.

Sounds quite cool, the Egyptians interest me quite a bit, but I always feel like I'm in school when I read up on them, I've seen quite a lot of stuff, including a a perfectly intact sarcophagus containing a 2 year old child, that's the rarest I've seen.

Sometimes I regret not doing a degree, I've been offered to have it paid for for me, but there's nothing I feel like I want to pursue futher.

Maybe later on in life I'll go.

Ta RobB, very insightful.
My degree couse is absolutely fantastic, its so interesting how other societies used to function. We can learn a lot today from past societies...for example, Aristophanes had already grasped the concept of Communism and written a play about a dystopic version of Athens in which a women becomes a Communist leader and it basically goes tits up because people are ambitious and always want to be more successful than other people. That was in the 5th century BC....
Even if I don't get a job with Classics, I'd love to write my own theories concerning certain things such as Merovignian Gaul. Either way, working at Mc Donalds is not a job for life unless its very well paid and therefore not on the shop floor but hidden away in an office somewhere being the brains in the outfit and all. Its all well and good for people to make fun of people like me working there, but I know hellava lot of people who use their student loans for booze money rather than go out and get a job...when I leave uni, I'll have saved some money and be in the green, not a fortune in debt unlike everyone else I know. Dunno how they plan to buy a house, they'll have a degree but £10k of debt and living with Mummy and daddy til they've saved enough to put down a deposit.
Maybe Mc Donalds isn't the most glamourous job in the world, but hey it gets me cash, i enjoy it, and having that I was a manager at 18 on my CV's bound to raise eyebrows when I go for another job later down the line. At least it's a decent, honest living.

I've toured archaeological sites all over the world with my parents, seen the pyramids and sphinx in Egypt and been to the Cairo museum, climbed a step pyramid in Mexico, walked around Pompeii, been in Roman catacombs....oh, and seen a coupla temples, like the Greek one at Ephesus. There's nothing to stop you being a mature student, my friend Hillary used to be a science teacher, has a daughter the same age as my mum, does the same course as me! Shes at least sixty.
And at uni, it's nothing like school. You're on a first name basis with the tutors and at Kent, everyone goes out of their way to help you as much as they can. It's just a great experience, I'd really reccommend it Smile

At least you have a job, I can't be that bad a place to work, no worse than most supermarkets and you'd get loads of shit if you worked in a pub/bar/late night restaurant.

My CG ain't the most glamorous bike in the world, I'm just glad I have one Very Happy

See, thats the thing, so many people who have no jobs mock me for mine, but what have they got to compare it to? I'd rather work hard in a horrible job than skank off the social, but I guess I'm just a proud person.
I used to want to work as a barmaid, but that has really lost all appeal to me. The male species, especially when intoxicated, is enough to make me want to deep fat fry them at Mc Donalds as it is. In a pub, I'd be done for glassing someone in the face I'm sure. The amount of dirty old men you get in Margate is frighteningly high, and I prefer to get on with my job minus letchy comments from 60-year old hobos. Razz

Mods an rockers came about in end of the 50s 60s .Slightly different lol Mods an rockers actually set fashion trends .Chavs just ruined them making things become cheap an unwanted .Mods had the nice Italian look ,While the rockers mad casual clothing fashion .Work jeans an leather jackets the same kinda clothing warn to work.

They only had issues with each other .Chavs have issues with everyone .

Chav's. Widely known for riding "ped's". Wear clothes which in their circles is considered fashionable.

Beleive many people had problem's with the Mod's & Rocker's, particularly older people. Whether it's just perceived or real they were there.

They seem to fit pretty much the same mold imo.

This thread has suddenly become much more interesting since the subject got hijacked into Mods and Rockers.

Thumbs Up

Cant really compare the two IMO

Much as I hate to admit it, occasionally you get chavs you are all right. I had one come in last week who had punched a glass window by the looks of things, so I washed all the glass out and bandaged it for him, and he actually said thanks! Sometimes chavs are polite, maybe 'cause I'm a girl and they're trying to get their leg over, but it's still manners I guess. Sometimes it's the grown up ones who're in their twenties that are the worse because they are pissed of a Saturday night, but then where do you draw the line at them being chavs or fully grown men who should not only be too mature to pin themselves to a group, but also take some moralistic viewpoint and account for their own actions?
You say that mods and rockers only attacked each other, well if you've ever seen the way a pack of chavs reacts to an emo or a goth then you'll notie how much more intense the bullying is. In normal clothes i can walk past a group of chavs 9/10 without getting abuse, but if I'm wearing all black then it's "arrrrr, look, filthy grunger, f**king goth..." etc. Made me laugh once because I was just wearing black trousers and a black shirt because I wanted to look smart.
I can't really cast my own full judgement though, on account of that I wasn't about when mods and rockers were. Bit before my time and all. I just know that history repeats itself a lot of the time, and there's always some factions of society or other warring against each other.
