Dam thing!
As you may remember the VFR has had suspect carb problems.
I was getting hesitation when accelerating, poor throttle response and backfiring.
I’ve checked over the ignition, everything is good.

I had it booked in to se a guy on Saturday, and of all the days the bike could have packed in, it packed on Friday afternoon on the f’ing motorway.
The bike is back at mine now, and I carried out the fairly tricky job of taking off the carbs yesterday.
Now on the VFR you have the four carbs sat on the pots with the rubbers underneath, TBH they seem to be in good condition so would I have to change them anyway?
Also the drain screws in the carbs have O-rings, the Haines manual says to change them when you overhaul the carbs, but they look mint condition?! So what do I do?

The carbs are off, I’m taking it to the workshop tonight, what sort of labour time am I looking at for blasting out dirt and varnish from the carbs and are there any extra bits they may have to order in when I come to put them back on the bike.

Hope this makes sense.

Killa

To be honest mate, if you've got the carbs off yourself, you may as well just get some carb cleaner and do it yourself. Just spray it all over them, and try and get some compressed air to blast off any crap you can see.

If the rubbers look OK I'd probably just leave them, I did on my ZXR. And as for the O rings, I'd leave them as well, when I cleaned my carbs up and reset the floats I didn't change the seal and there fine.

Thumbs Up

Just make sure you dont over tighten the screws on the float bowls, in case you thread them.

As Siggi says unless you fuck it up yourself in the first place I'd just have a go. I'm now an expert pretty much with ZXR fuelling problems, cos I spent so long messing about on my bike. Must of had the carbs off 20-30 times (seriously).

Give it a go mate, you'll be paying for some twat to spray carb cleaner on them for 5 minutes.

Thumbs Up

Seems like I’m a twat for breaking down then….

I thought you had to dismantle the carbs to do a proper clean up job Thinking

If I clean them up myself I am not very confident with resetting them, don’t I need special tools to put the carbs back on properly? Sorry if that is a stupid question.

Just spray the carb cleaner all over the butterflys, all around the choke mechanism etc, knock yourself out.

You wont need any special tools to put them back on, the tools you got them off with will do.

Have a look at the diaphragms as well mate, check to make sure there's no holes or anything in there.

Thanks a lot guys….

Question then, at what point would you need to re-balance the carbs?

Would be a good idea to get that done anyway. Find out how much the garage want to do that, if it's cheap enough ask them. It should only take them half an hour or so, that's how long it took on my bike. If not then you can get yourself a set of vacuum gauges and do it yourself, although I dont really know how to 'cos my old man did mine.

The carbs should be be balanced every time you take them off, and, if you never take them off, I would recommend once a year.

Remember that you need to make sure that your valve clearances need to be right before you balance the carbs.

Cheers

Pull the float bowls, drop the mains & pilots out, pop the tops off & have a butchers at the diaphragms. carb cleaner/compressed air thru all the passges etc.
