Hi guys basically on the hunt for why my nsr stopped (after 8 months standing it started, worked all day then stopped and wont restart)

Basically I have a spark, and fuel and the engine turns so we concluded it must be compression. Tried a compression test and although we were getting a terrible seal due the awkward nsr head, it was pretty clear crompression was low, you could even keep your finger over the whole with effort.

So now I'm stripping it down for a look-see. Head is off already as is radiator and eshaust. I have all 3 of the "obvious" bolts for the barrel off, I was wondering if there were any others, as the barrel doesnt even seem interested in moving yet! The powervalve is still on if that makes any difference.

See below for pics, also my piston has a thin blac coating on its crown, which can be shifted with your finger, is this normal?
Sorry for the long post any help appreciated

Can't really help with the barrel removal I'm afraid as I've never done it. The coating on the piston is normal though. It's carbon deposit from burning the 2 stroke oil.

I don't know about the number of bolts holding the barrel on.
But are you sure its compression? If the bike was running OK and didn't stop with a bang or any odd noises I wouldn't have thought compression was your problem.
Some things I would have looked at first.
1. Old fuel......change
2. Spark plug....change.
3. Flooded.....no choke full throttle and kick like a mad man
4. Battery....should be ok if it started but check charge.
Still no joy?
5. Clean air filter...don't forget to re oil
6. Check and clean any fuel filters
7. Clean out carb.....crap from old fuel can block jets etc.
Still no joy.
Maybe now start doing compression checks but also worth checking out the electrics.
Good luck

Ahh shame the fella couldn't have been more specific.
Could be compression but running out of steam....mmm difficult.
You need someone better than me then.
Sorry I can't help more

I did a rebuild on a haonda crm125(same engine except just a kick start). Same thing mate would run for a while and then just die on you Low compression but there was an abviouse hole on the crown of the piston on the exhaust port where something had broken off. What year is it as i know of a low milleage nsr 2000ish with low milleage just a knackered frame. Thumbs Up Smile

You'll also need a new head gasket and seal for the shaft the power valve sits on. (unless you got it out in one piece - good job if you did!) I'd also change the little end bearing as well, may as well whilst you have the head off. I did mine about six months ago, so if you need any pointers let me know, I might be able to help Thumbs Up
