Hi

If it is a frame swap with a 2nd hand frame then the bike has the identity of the frame you are fitting (the registration number is tied to the frame number, the engine number, etc, is pretty irrelevant). All the DVLA need to know is the change in engine number (and possibly colour). This is why mangled frames from crashed bikes are often more expensive than a brand new frame, as they can be used to give a stolen bike a new identity.

If it is a brand new frame then it will need to be stamped with the old frame number (new frames come without numbers) and the DVLA do not need to know.

All the best

Keith

I'd go from whichever has the most miles on.

Hi

Mileage is difficult to know. In theory it will be recorded against the registration and thus will come from the frame you are fitting. Which is fairly irrelevant.

You will be surprised how cheap a new frame is compared to 2nd hand one.

All the best

Keith

Hi

We did a frame swap on McJamweasal ZX6R after he found a crack in the frame. It is a fair amount of work. It was an unused frame that he bought, although he got it 2nd hand (still with all the Kawasaki spares stickers) which dropped the price a bit. Think a brand new frame from Kawasaki was ~£650.

Make sure you have everything you need. Such as crash bungs that will come out when you want them to Wink .

All the best

Keith

Yeah the bike has been run throught he winter so could be abit of a hassel. Think he got it with a v5 for less than £200. Im also doing any bits and bobs when doint the swap. Any recomendation for sequenceing of swap ie engine first running gear type thing?

Hi

Depends what tools you have. We used a car engine hoist to lift / lower the frame when we wanted to which made things easier. Generally I would put the engine on the floor and lower the frame onto it. Then lift the frame / engine up and fit the suspension.

Try and avoid dismantling anything that doesn't need taking apart. For example we left all the wiring / headlights / front fairing support all together to be unbolted / bolted back on as a single unit. Same for the swinging arm, suspension linkage, rear wheel and rear brake (although if they need stripping down and cleaning this is a perfect time to do it).

Have some new steering head bearings handy. Expect to have to replace some bolts. If you need to drill out any fairing bolts then remember that the bolt will get hot when drilled and can melt the plastic of the fairing.

If you are just doing this because the frame is tatty then consider having the old frame powder coated instead. Think it cost me £125 for the Bandit frame to be done, along with numerous other bits for other bikes.

All the best

Keith

Its a thundercat frame subframe is twisted and the frame has a ding in it along with the steering lock being damaged. And thanks for the info.
