were used origionally by horses,

so arn't they techincally bridle ways?

Isn't it illegal to block/obstruct a bridle way.

Arn't councils all over the UK blocking tow paths with gates which are hard enough to get a push bike or three dogs through let alone a full blown horse?

So would someone if they decided to be able to take the councils to court and get the gates removed? or made horse friendly?

I can remeber riding my pony down the canal towpath into the centre of coventry when I was about 10 Laughing wouldn't be able to do it now.

what if I wanted to though?

dicuss Smile

I believe canal towpaths are private property, now owned by British waterways. You do not have any right of way on them whatsoever.

interesting point simple
in theory you are meant to have a license to ride a push bike along the canal but i have only been asked to show one once, and then i just rode off

all the gates i have seen, you can lift the bike over the gate, a horse could jump it, and you could get a motorbike past by wheeling it on the edge where the canal is and leaning it out to get past the gate

i once saw a lad on a minimoto on a canal towpath which seemed a bit odd to me.

so have u still got a pony then ?

youve got all the toys, motorbikes, shotguns, horses etc

ive got an inflatable canoe i use sometimes on the canal near me Smile

Pony had a heart attack and snuffed it. Got another one but he's fat and useless wanna buy him? £500?

I also have an inflatable boat, use it on the fishing pond for de-pond weeding it.

A pony could possibly jump the gates, not if it was towing a barge however.

All the toys and no money to use them, typical eh.

Having the dubious pleasure of working for British Waterways (Nice location... average pay !) I asked round the office today.

Unless the towpath is also marked as a bridal way then it's not allowed.

Motor vehicals of any sort are banned.

Cycles are allowed on certain towpaths and you 'should' have a licence (but I think this is free anyway)

And just to confuse matters even further there are 10 areas and they probably all have different rules !

We applied to British waterways for licenses so we could ride our pushbikes along the towpaths near our caravan. That was about 18months ago and we've not recieved a reply yet.

If you just ride your cycle, are they going to check wether you have a licence or not? You could always plead ignorance if they did. Somehow, I can't imagine British Waterways regularly policing the tow paths. I dont see anything morally wrong in this, especially as you tried to obtain a licence, which is free anyway.

I quite fancy doing horse riding at some point but as my garden is about 10 metres by 20metres I dont think its well suited to keeping a horse.

Having said that, some ppl on the local council estates get horses and keep them in the park chained to a stake in the ground. Havnt seen any for a while and it seems a bit mean particulalry in summer when they have nothing to drink.

I admit Im not a serious prospect as a buyer but you might want to brush up on those sales skills. Fat and useless arent necessarily words that generae a sale.

Assuming I had a field, stable whatever, how much does it cost to feed a horse a week ?

And how much wd it be to rent space in a stable to keep it? I have heard there are places that do this.

any idea why they want cycles to have a license that is free anway ? Is it to that if you are naughty they can revoke your license and magically stop you using tow paths ?

A lot.

A lot Laughing

My mum used to have a 19 hand shire horse called George. The result of me spending a lot of time around muddy stables and fields as a kid, is that I now really don't like horses. When she died the horse went onto a free loan to an old chap who's a shire enthusiast. However the horse'll out live him, so we've probably not seen the end of that troublesome horse Neutral Unsurprisingly, there aren't vast swathes of people looking to take on such a massive horse, so if the old chap dies we're probably going to be stuck looking after the horse for a good few months at least Confused

last year i was cycling in lyme park in february, had the whole place to myself, when a landrover appears in the distance. It soon becomes clear that its heading over to me.
The conversation went :
Hitler " you cant cycle away from the paths "

me " sorry ? why not ? "

H " you will scare the animals "

M " oh, what about your landrover ? "

H " not your problem son "

made me laugh. Me and my mountain bike would scare the deer, but him in his huge LWB landy wouldnt ??!!.
what can you do ?

well, out livestock will follow and chase out 4x4's. they associate them with food, I'd assume deer would get used to vehicles too.

however push bikes, people walking dogs etc, things they don't expect they will run off or get all aggressive with whatever it is they don't like.

Our cattle often escort ramblers back to the style they have just come from where the ramblers then stand, a little confused as to what they should do now.

Theres a nature pool near my caravan which is owned by British Waterways. They're spent a fain bit of money tidying it up, they laid a path all the way round it, with boardwalks so that you can get right up to the waters edge. At the gates where you enter they put up signs saying "Cyclists Dismount". I Presume this is for safety reasons as (1) The boardwalks are quite narrow, about 4 ft & have no hand rails or anything to stop you falling in the water, and (2) There are people walking round the path and there isn't room to get out of the way of oncoming cyclists.
Everytime we go round the pool, we are met by Mr & Mrs Moron with their kids in tow, CYCLING round the fucking path. If you attempt to tell them that cycling isn't permitted they just say "well no ones told us that" then they carry on cycling around the path.
This pool is right facing the British Waterways office, and they cant even be bothered to enforce their own rules.

Take a walking stick, refuse to get out their way, they won't hit you, use your stick if you fear for your own personal safety and nudge them in,

thought you'll prolly get done for polluting the water Laughing
