Did a format yesterday and now my PC wont shutdown. When I click shutdown all it does is display the timer thing, and do nothing. I have to turn it off via the power button, but it boots up again perfectly and other than this shutdown thing it's running absolutely fine.

Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers.

Hmm, this one has me baffled. Aside from a hardware problem somewhere I have no idea with this one, I cant be arsed to format it all again and see if that sorts it.

Maybe I need to have a mess about in the BIOS.

Have you installed sp2, if so it's a known issue. Not sure if there's a fix I'll take a look at work tommorow.

Yeah, my copy of XP comes with SP2 so there's no way to not install it. It's never done this before, and I've formatted this machine 3-4 times, seems strange how it would start all of a sudden?

this is usually related to ACPI drivers. make sure you have no UNKNOWN DEVICES showing on device manager and do a windows update if you havent already.

Looks like I spoke too soon, it's still doing it, Evil or Very Mad.

I've been all through the BIOS and there's nothing in there to cause a problem, so I've got no idea with this one.

Nope, in fact I've got less stuff installed this time.

I can CTRL+ALT+DELETE, but that's not showing anything that might cause a problem in processes so I've got no idea.

Cheers anyway mate.

I formatted again yesterday, got it pretty much setup and then got some shitty virus, and neither Ad-Aware, AVG, eTrust AV or a-squared could get rid of it. Searched high and low for it and couldn't find it anywhere, so I had to format AGAIN, but it's sorted the problem.

Thumbs Up

God knows what it was mate, it wasn't showing ANYWHERE, and no matter how many virus/spyware scans I did it didn't show up. To be honest a format was the only way to get rid of it, and at least it's running properly now.

Cheers again.
