I'm looking to buy a new laptop so that my girlfriend can take my current one to uni. Don't want to spend a fortune, but from what I've seen most of the £399 laptops aren't that good value for money.

What would you people recommend for around 5-700 quid? Will possibly be used for some basic gaming (WoW). I do want one of the glossy/xblack type screens that is at least 15". TV out would be a very useful extra.

From what I've seen so far the Toshiba A100-549 for £600 seems the best laptop, that's from Dixons.

Thanks for any help.

Thumbs Up
Rick.

https://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=4409&category_id=86&manufacturer_id=5

This is the laptop I got and for £510 I think it's the dogs bollox, it plays most games at a reasonable level but the thing that attracted me most was the WiFi, 512MB RAM and 80GB HDD. Very Happy

Also CCL online are absolutely brilliant. Thumbs Up

I'll agree with Jon there; for budget laptops you really can't beat Acer. I got an Aspire 5002, and although it packs a high level processor (Turion as opposed to Sempron) doesn't have the integrated WiFi or 80GB (60GB) HDD the 3003 has. However, I did pick it up for £410 without paying VAT. Unfortunately, they seem to have been discontinued. Sad But I still maintain that an Acer is an excellent option for someone on a budget.

What's the cheapest laptop I could get that has a 15" Sony x black type of screen? That's ignoring all the other specs.

We've seen a few 399 laptops that are very good, similar to the one we use now which, really, is enough for what we need. Would be nice to get the better screen though.

Ricks girlfriend.

anyone care to venture the difference between the processor types

i mean how the hell do you choose between intel and amd when the price difference is 3 quid

the choice is huge on just that CCL site for ACER laptops, where do you start

you can get the AMD 3300 series which apparently runs at 2ghz, or the Intel 1.6ghz for about the same money

without referring to millions of techy computer sites that mean nothing to someone like me, how do you decide?

I was about to recommend the Vaio FJ1Z, picked one up for my partner recently at ~£800, looks like it was a special though as they're now advertised around the £1000 mark. If you do spend that much though, very nice machine. WoW in widescreen on the Xblack TFT is a thing of much beauty, seems to run everything thrown at it with nary a problem. Wants it I does Drooling

Acer. Thumbs Up

Got one of these which came with 40GB HDD and 512MB RAM. I spent £480 on mine, then spent another £35 at crucial on another 512MB of RAM.

Works sweet for me.

Can you get a laptop with athlon 64s in yet?

Or the dual core processor?

Cos that would be awesome, but may need a massive fan though Shocked

All AMD CPU's in laptops now are Athlon 64's disguised with another name.

Exactly, the heat on them is pretty bad. Mine keeps overheating and shutting down, I think a fan may be on the way out. Rolling Eyes

But the newest performance processors are all 64 bit now. And there's a new Powerbook which is dual core Intel. It must be astonishingly fast. Shocked
