Hey folks.

I'm new to this having just sat my CBT (on an SR125,) thought it would be a good idea to ride around on a 125 for a while to get the hang of things before going for the full test.

The thing is, whats the best 125 to get? I need something that'll hit 65mph (for Edinburgh city bypass) but I don't like the Aprillia type bikes with all the fairings etc etc etc.

Right so, an off road enduro thing? Perhaps one of these chinese models? (But they're gutless right?) I really fancy a TW125, chunky tires look good.

I think most of all, (and I realise this might be hard given the 125cc limitation) I don't want a sewing machine.

Any advice greatly appreciated, ta.

Paul.

PS: One more thing, you can get an upgraded sprocket on the chinese bikes (they say) I asked if this made a difference and got an uber-vague answer. Does it make a difference??

Thanks again.

CG125
CLR125
Varadero125

Will all satisfy your requirements.

You can lose teeth/add teeth off of the sprockets to give you more topend or better acceleration (with detriment to the other one).

Ta for that.

I'm thinking about a CLR125, can I get a sprocket with more/less teeth (Ummm which ever will make it go a bit faster) for this type of bike.

I'm not a speed junky, I'll admit to an early mid-life crisis but I'm a pussy at heart. I just don't want to get fubar'd by a lorry...

Thanks again.

Worlds End Motorcycles sell front sprockets less teeth.

https://shop.wemoto.com/index.dyn?oid=25188

If the bike is between '99 and '03. this is the right page for it.

You'll find loads of other spares as well, if you can't find what you want then try Dave Silver Spares (google)

Do your licence.. I would seriously consider it. You'll only get about 6 months down the line and I can almost promise you that piddling along dual carriageways will seriously wind u up. My bike does 60 and annoys the hell outta me listening to it struggle.

Get a rs/nsr I hear people say.. for £800-£1500 you can get alot better, reliable and faster for the same money.

I was considering a 125 but for what its worth and all the hassle of wanting a bigger bike later, taking test, finding a bigger bike etc I thought is it really worth it?

Thing with 125's is they are made for running about not up and down dual carriageways.. Think about it.. All that effort for a small engine to do 60-70mph compared to say a 500 commuter.

I'd not bother with a 125 either, unless you plan on running it for a commuter and then getting a bigger bike for fun. Im not a fat chap by any stretch, but I found that the SR 125 i did my CBT on was completely lifeless at anything over 20ish mph..

I thought about it, and hten realised to sell it etc is more hassle, and more money lost. Just go straight for the bigger bike, and put the extra interest gained on your hard earned to a decent chain or something to lock it down with..

Aye...

I will eventually in about six months time sit one of the two tests. I have a poor history with road related tests and since it's not cheap to do the bike thing, I thought it would be wise to get comfy on the bike, (You know, being able to use both back and front brake properly without getting all cack-handed.)

I usually stay in town anyway, right now I'm at home saving some cash (for Edinburgh's ridiculous rental market...) so the bypass is a temporary thing.

Thanks for the heads up on the suppliers Very Happy

Paul

dt125
its a 2 stroke so its twice as powerful as the 4 stroke 125's but its not a race replica so it wont get damaged much if you drop it and its less highly tuned so is less likely to go wrong

it will be more thirsty than a 4 stroke tho

if fuel economy is important rather than acceleration is important, then get a cg125
