I was pondering this after watching some video footage - could a bike ride be done live? The way I see it you'd need the following:

1> A video camera (with a *night* mode for night stuff if you wanted to try it,)
2> A bike video camera rig,
3> A mobile phone with a half decent internet connection,
4> A small lightweight laptop with decent batteries to link the camera and phone, and run the...
5> Streaming software to connect to a...
6> Streaming server to take the one signal and stream to multiple users,
7> Lots of duct tape and string.

Has anyone ever attempted this before? Also, anyone got any suggestions for the phone/streaming aspect?

If there is a decent amount of interest it might be worth trying a test run through my local town, and if that works we could actually try the real thing...

Just curious from a "Can it be done..." kinda aspect Smile

Chris

I think you might need a satelite dish to broadcast it with or a really long lead otherwise I dont know how you'd connect anywhere.

Using the mobile phone.

My question would have to be 'Why'?
Don't quite see what it 'offers' as such.

Also offers all sorts of possibilities for getting busted.

Interesting, you'd be able to get a half decent rate streaming off a 3g mobile.

You're completely correct, it offers absolutely no practical use save something like:

* Trackdays - If set up for track days, BCF members who couldn't make it can watch all their favourite forumites blasting round Donnington, etc... Smile

* Treasure Hunt - Some sort of Treasure Hunt or map game where 4 bikers go out and have to get to specific locations, etc... it's a shit idea but you could use a live feed for it.

* Bike Meets - Could just take it for the hell of it and then detach the camera from the bike.

I dunno - I just wonder if it's possible Smile

They do live feeds from MotoGP and WSB bikes... and they don't need a laptop and all the other stuff strapped to them to make it work.

Then again, they have a helicopter flying overhead picking up the signal... Laughing

But a live feed doesn't offer much over an uploaded-after video, apart from perhaps something along your tressure hunt idea if it was some how 'interactive'.

Also, I presume you're going to paying a massive for the phone connection which I very much doubt will offer acceptable video quality.

I have thought along similar lines using a wireless network card to record race videos without using an on bike hard disk (due to vibrations), however came to the conclusion it wasn't worth the effort for that case.

I think if you were able to do this, and pay everyones phone bill for using the net, then it might take off...

I agree with G that it would only be of any interest if it was somehow interactive - like the treasure hunt idea.

Plus im sure with all that crap attatched to the bike - you are attracting attention to yourself realy, and run a higher risk of getting pulled over.

Still though, get it working, and ill tune in Thumbs Up

You'd never get a stable enough connection on the mobile network for live streaming on the move.

I'd be a tad worried about the attention before you ride the bike.
Cops do read public forums such as this. Just need for someone with a bug up their arse to watch it and call in a patrol car to your exact location if they see anything dodgy on the video - of course recording it themselves for evidence.

That is of course assuming that the live feed is disclosed and the location is allready known.

For someone to just send a live feed, by the time the trackers have located the feed, the dude would be home with all his camera's and kit hidden away somewhere.

Though the point is that it would be disclosed Smile.
Presuming general area is known, the location should be pretty damn easy to work out for any local traffic officers.

So what we are saying is,

that for this to be able to go ahead - with minimal risk of getting discovered before its even started, is to only tell the riders taking part in the treasure hunt where they will be. For no one else to be told until afterwards, and probably for nothing out of order to be done on the way.

Obviously avoiding known landmarks that local police might pick up on whilst watching.

Mmmmmm Makes for seriously exciting viewing eh? Wink

I'm just geared towards the technical challenge of actually getting it working... the reason is a tough one.

Some sort of live 'race' where participants had to reach 10 checkpoints within a specific time, but could do them in any order. I dunno, to be honest the only reason I'd want it done is so that I've got something to watch in the downtime at work Wink

Your main and massive problem would be bandwidth (oh and latency).

[edit]And just had a thought, rather than all this fancy stuff, why not have a video phone to do the stuff for you? Then to do the distribution at the other end.
However, you're still going to be on limited bandwidth. I doubt a phone that can just about display a jerky image of someone's face will handle fast moving video.
[/edit]

From experience you need way higher bandwidth than a phone can handle. The compression used in such things doesn't work very well when you've got fast moving backgrounds.

The best way to get a live feed of yourself on a bike would be to go over to LA and steal one. That way all the news helicopters would be all over you within 10 minutes and all your friends could watch you live on satelite tv! Wink
