Handing out flyers

Does anyone know the legalities of handing out flyers, for instance outside a shopping centre or maybe around pubs etc? I approached 'The Centre MK' (Milton Keynes) and they want an arse stretching £600 for a Saturday pitch inside the building, I'm wondering what is to stop me handing flyers out outside of the building to people going in the building.
Can I get in trouble for loitering, littering, public nuisance or what?
Any ideas who I would contact?
Any advice very welcome but please dont guess, I can do that myself!

No, I'm not having a laugh.

I am just a little worried that if the council find thousands of flyers strewn all over the floor with my contact details on them that they might want me to clear the mess up or bill me for it.

You should see my Uni and surrounding areas, the place is in 4foot deep of flyers every night, but by morning its all gone.

Not too sure if there is any agreement by council and the owners of the flyers about clearup costs.

Some supermarkets have an express 'no flyer' policy, but I'm not sure how legally binding it is. I've recently been doing some 'guerilla marketing' where I just go to a direct competitor's meeting place (this is networking business events) and slap a flyer on every car there. You can really annoy the competition (the leader of the competition sent out a very angry, teary email about it which we managed to get our hands on) but it won us quite a few members.

I also went around for a charity event, putting up flyers in pubs and newsagents. Obviously I asked for that, but most were fine with it. Of course, it was a charity event, so they're more likely to be.

If you just want to stand in a busy area handing out flyers, there's nothing illegal about that. But in this day in age when everyone's at it, I think there are more effective marketing strategies.
