HI. I was wondering if I could get rid of the ignition barrel and put a hidden imobiliser type switch somewhere instead? I was thinking of attaching it to the coil wires (not the HT lead). Any thoughts?

You could, but why? And what bike is it?

Yes you can. You will need a six terminal, two position switch so it can both make and break circuits in both positions. I'm not going into details of which on here as it would simply be a manual on 'how to hotwire a bike'.

Well, before I bought the bike, it had been stolen. The thieves had used a screwdriver in the ignition barrel and broke it inside. We thought it would be better if the ignition barrel wasn't there. I thought it might be safer the other way - and less tempting. The bike is a 1980's Yamaha SR250 Special.

I've just fitted a normal 'on-off' switch on my FZR400 racer in place of the ignition barrel (sort of visable in this pic). Its not hard at all, but like Stink says, I'll not post up details on how its done. Took about 10 mins with a multimeter. Wink

Your not too far from me Deb, if you want a hand give me a shout.

Thumbs Up

I have a nice antique 'flick switch' off a gypsy moth aeroplane in black japanned brass and bakelite on my GPZ. Has a really nice, positive action. *contact!* CLICK.
