Surely the congestion charge was sold to us as a disincentive to bring cars into London - and thus someone else not paying wouldn't affect your 'fair share', as there is supposedly no target figure of cash they are trying to raise!

It sounds like Ken has accidentally admitted that he sees the congestion charge as a means of raising X amount of money regardless, and the fact that other people are not paying it is messing up his figures. It certainly seems to put the lie on his claim that it's all about traffic jams and the enviroment.

Anyone else see what I'm trying to say, and think it makes sense?

Hi

As it is pretty much his only source of income (and his office was set up by labour in that way, pretty much forcing whoever had become mayor to bring in the congestion charge) it is certain that its main purpose was income.

It is not to prevent congestion. After all plenty of congestion was deliberatly created to try and justify the congestion charge.

Ermm, I've hated Ken since I was aware of him, and have never voted anything other than Conservative. I despise the guy nearly as much as I despise my local council, who happily steal all my money and spend it on crap, whilst neglecting to empty my bin - the only service I can actually feel they are giving me.

How much has the congestion reduced in London? I was never there before the congestion charge but I've bee driving around London every day for the last 2 weeks, and if that's it better it must have been a nightmare before! Confused

Its made congestion elsewhere Neutral HUMAN CONGESTION. Seen how many people cram together up and down the streets and on the public transport. And theres nothing worse than having your personal space obliterated by some sweaty bloke standing up next to you holding a grab rail on a tube or bus with his sweaty armpit in your face Sick

Why? Congestion is a side effect of people going where they want to go. How is stopping people going about their business a good thing? Why is moving the congestion elsewhere a good thing? Why is coming up with a hideously expensive charging mechanism so almost off of the money collected is just wasted in collection a good thing?

Main ways it has effected congestion is that they deliberatly created large amounts of congestion in the run up to the introduction of the charge (rephased traffic lights, extra road works, closed roads, etc) and then finished this just in time for the charge so it appeared to work. The other way is by making various businesses in the centre of London either go bust or move out of the centre, which reduces the number of people going there.

much like the NL trick of making 24/7 drinking laws and at the same time finding 15 million quid to front a massive police campaign to prove violence was no worse.

but then again NL are low lifes and use this trickery all the time

At least they had a choice. Those of us outside London have to suffer his charges but have no legal response.

Lets only allow the congestion charge for those who can vote in the elections for London mayor Wink .

I loathe democracy, but sadly theres no better way.

Jus amazes me how willingly people defend it, blindly.

At least in dictats they say its for X, Y or Z, and they take the hard line that is crap on short term good on long term.

I'm working on a large building refubishment project on park lane, the front of the hotel is on park lane which is conjestion free, if i drop tools and materials to the loading bay at the rear it costs the company £8.00 a shot. Add that to £25 per day parking and £50 per night hotel bill it soon mounts up to large overheads, still there's only another 12 months left to do.
What gets me most is the added delivery charge just to go about your everyday business. When i forget to pay it automatically jumps to £50 the next day.
Can I go home now please!
