The caliper on my 1981 Z200 is utter crap (cable operated disk) and is worst at braking than my dads 1957 C12, would it be possable to retro fit a later hydrolic system from a more modern bike if l just find something with the same fixing distance for the fork leg?

Has anyone ever done a simular retro fit or would it be easyer to replace the whole front end?

Hi

Should be possible if you can find one with the right spacing. Need master cylinder, brake light switch and line as well.

All the best

Keith

I'd say the same as above. If you cant find the same spacing then you could probably get your ruler out, have a measure and ask someone who works in a machine shop to knock you an adapter plate out for whatever caliper you can get your hands on. I'd look for something common. An old yam 2 pot caliper would probably do the job and should be readily available cheap.

1981 bike just needs a brake light switch on the rear.

You could probably modify the backing plate off a sliding calliper to fit (might need to make some spacers). The hole centres on the backing plate for a GPZ500 sliding twin pot calliper are 56mm apart.

Might be worth swapping the fork legs round too so the lugs are along the back of the fork leg. This puts the braking forces through the fork leg rather than through the metal of the lug itself.

l,ll go down the breakers on saturday with the caliper and a vernia and have a hunt through the boxs, as long as l can get the right caliper l guess l can just find any old brake line and lever/master cyclinder that fits the bars and caliper.

Try to get a reasonably close calliper and master cylinder. Ideally ones that go together but failing that try to find a master cylinder off a bike that has the same type and size of calliper.

That said, anything is probably better than what you have now.

If you are buying salvaged parts, why not get a suitable pair of forks, along with the brake calipers?

Too expensive the breakers around here take the piss when it comes to forks, the front brake lever is part of the right hand switch gear so l,m going to have to get a right hand switch gear too.

from memory l would be looking at

switch gear: £5
caliper: £10-20
Hydrolic pipe: (got stock KR-1S pipes somewere)
master cyclinder and lever: £10-20

maybe £25-45 total for the reto fit, would be worth it saftey wise. Thumbs Up

You should manage OK, if you can't get a caliper with the same mountings then you should be able to get an adaptor plate made up. Also bear in mind that the disc should run in the centre of the caliper, not offset to one side or the other, so you may need to measure the side clearance as well.

You can get spacers made up out of some alloy to fit nearly any calliper onto your bike. Here's a picture of the spacer I had made for my KLE when I put an ER5 wheel in it. (Luckily I know a guy who likes playing with machine tools so he did it cheap).

I wonder if a GPz305 front end would fit? They have twin discs and there should be loads of them out there with blown engines so intact cycle parts should be reasonably common.

Front ends are usually so expensive in breakers because most people bend the forks when they crash their bike, this is why they are in the breakers to start with.
