Hi all – great forum, have been hiding in the shadows gleaning lots of info for the past couple of weeks!

I’ve got my test coming up this week and was wondering what procedure everyone had been taught once you’ve completed your emergency stop. (i.e. once you’ve stopped, sorted your gears out, done both shoulder observations, whether you ride to the curb, carry on etc)

I’m sure I’ll come up with some more last minute questions when the nerves start going!

Thanks in advance

Stop (in the middle of the road). Look over both shoulders and paddle to the side of the road. Then sort out your gears and await instructions. Don't sort out your gears in the middle of the road and ride to the side.

I have been taught to get it into first just as I stop, if I can, then shoulder checks on both sides and ride smoothly to the side of the road.

Ouch...two different answers Confused

I got mine on Wednesday so some more answers would be handy. That way Markyuk and myself can do a count up. Perhaps both answers are correct??

Clutch in just before you stop/stall but don't piss about changing down gears. Tha's what I was taught and it got me through k - just don't forget the lookaround before you paddle off to the side of the road. You not having any lesons (what does your instructor say)?

Passed on the 13/03/06. I was taught to select first AFTER safely stopping, followed by shoulder checks then riding up to kerb when safe to do so... me and the other lad on DAS with me both passed with following this procedure.

Another tip i would suggest is to RELAX, when i was practicing i kept changing down while stopping (apply brakes). Was told this could fail me so on test i just relaxed more, took more time going through motions. Once i came to a complete stop i took a deep breath, then selected first, right mirror, left mirror left shoulder, pulled up on side next to instructor...

If unsure ask instructor and go over it as much as poss...good luck

My instructor did tell me it is no big deal if I don't get it into first, or even if I stall it. It's just best practice. The important thing is to stop quickly & safely, and to get to the side of the road safely.

I have failed two tests so far, but neither of them have been due to my emergency stop Wink

I'm with DynamiteBoy,
emergency stop,
shoulder checks both sides while changing down to first,
then ride to the kerb

I think the important thing is stopping quickly, checking over both shoulders and getting to the side of the road safely.

I was told to stop, check over both shoulders then paddle to the l/h side kerb. A CBT instructor and a DAS instructor told me this. The idea is once you have stopped you need to get to a place of safety asap so paddling is quicker than trying to kick down to first - and what if you stall it, starting the engine selecting 1st gear is a lot slower than paddling to the kerb. Thumbs Up Good luck with your test Laughing

That seems a bit strange, surely the emphasis is stopping and not locking up the back wheel, I was taught to pull the clutch in at the last possible second so that the engine does some of the braking.

My instructor was not impressed when I changed down a gear during my emergency stop.

My DSA book on CBT, theory and practical test just says you should react quickly, try to stop in a straight line and take special care if the road is wet.

Nothing about immediatley after Confused

Similar here. I was taught to stop as quickly and safely as possible (i.e. no locking up the rear, no stalling etc. if possible, but your front should dip), then check the road is clear by looking over both shoulders. If it's clear, sort out gears and ride to the side (on your test, this will be the case; the examiner will pick a nice and quiet road), otherwise get out of the way as best as possible.

Both tests so far that is exactly what I did and it wasn't remarked upon.

Totally agree here, it's what I did when I passed my test.

Thanks for all the replies - I'm pretty sure thats what I was taught in my CBT, and what I've been doing whilst I've been practicing (although i was changing down gears once I'd done my shoulder checks).

I had been hoping to get a couple of hours lessons just to iron out any bad habits I may have and to concrete such issues as this but unfortunately the training school I did my CBT with only do what they call "courses" i.e. intensive training over a set period (usually 4/5 days) (basically so they can squeeze as much money out of you as they can!) so I gave up on the idea and am just going with my fingers well and truly crossed.

Thats my school of thought too. As I dont need over 33hp ( I have to be a good boy for at least two years....1 more speeding thingy and its game over) I figure I can fail up to 7 times for the amount the school would charge in my town. Installments too...a test a month lol

Milky bars are on me if I do it Wednesday Smile

Passed my test last thursday and the Emergency stop was as follows

Front brake applied gradually then bring in rear gradually.
Last moment bring in the clutch (Up to this point your getting engine assist for stopping evenly)
Right shoulder then left shoulder check then paddle over to the side of the road.

My instructor informed me that you DO NOT change gear whilst in the road as you may get hit by a car whilst messing with the gears.
He did say that you could bring up the revs and move the bike in 2nd or 3rd gear with your feet down but the paddle method was preferred and the only one they taught.

you can paddle to the side of the road if you want and you will not be penalised for it on your test after you have done your observations of course.

I think though that it takes around 7 seconds to paddle to the side of the road and 3 seconds to ride over after selecting first gear.

Its just personal choice really at the end of that day, personally i would rather ride over and thats what i did when i took my test Smile

As I remember it, the emphasis was on stopping as quickly and safely as possible without skidding.
My instructor didn't seem to make too much of it whether we stalled the bike on the emergency stop or not, or even whether we paddled or rode back to the kerb. As long as you did the correct mirror and shoulder checks before moving towards the kerb, it was OK Thumbs Up ...Safety is no.1

I passed Very Happy Sorry didn't post sooner - just got back off of holiday.

I got 3 minors - hesitation, indication and....something else! He missed when I lost my balance the first time he asked me to pull over and had to put both feet down Confused (some of the roads round here aren't tarmacced right to the edge of the road so they taper off to cobbles, I misjudged it and rolled off the tarmac on to the cobbles!)

Overall I think he was quite leniant because I've been driving for 5 yrs, but a BIG thanks to all those who have posted invaluable information on here and well done to Rit.
