What do you mean by 'wonky'? - out of line, buckled or what?

the markings are out by about 2mm

I wouldn't worry about the markings, thay can't be relied on 100%. Best way is to make sure it's in line with the front wheel.

Sounds like the chain has not been adjusted correctly. They should be equal distances.

remember that when adjusting either one of them to match the other may ffect the tension of the chain. But it is something you can do yourself. Get your user manual out, it'll give you a full explanation on how to adjust the chain.
