Continuing on a limited chatroom debate I'd like a few more opinions on this conundrum I have.

Which is better

SV650 68BHP , 170kg
NC30 65BHP , 165kg

Insurance is lower for the SV but cus its newer it costs more than a mint NC30 I've seen , also I don't need any of them for commuting on since I have an NTV650 to do that , just something to attack the corners* , I'm a bit iffy about a suzi (poor finish) and the fact that the SV is a bit common. I did consider an RGV250 but this fell out of the running due to an explosive nature and horrible maintainance.

Key points IMHO , corner ability + maintainance difficulty.

(* and to do what Maurice did last year and go see Europe on it)

Anybody like to share their views?

If you're considering an nc30, then there's not much point in considering an sv, completely different bikes. NC30 is probably better standard around the twisties. The sv is fun but really needs suspension mods to get the best out of it, as it tends to dip and dive.

I'd always go for the suzuki myself, don't like the idea of spending lots of cash on a 400cc 13year old bike when you could get a 4 year old sv. Wink

Or maybe I'm thinking of the nc35, is that the tarts handbag bike?

Your comparing two entirely different bikes.

Ones a budget jap commuter, the other is a bloody expensive sportsbike.

I'd have the NC30 over the sv.

i dont think the sv650 is exactly a commuter but it definitely is a budget bike with budget suspension

a nice 400 is quite expensive for the age of what you are getting, but you can get an sv650 quite cheap for its age

you really need to try both out
for me the sv650 was geared too high to be a good commuter, yet didnt have the revvy engine which is fun on country roads

maybe its an aquired taste
i guess the sv650 is a compromise between a sportsbike and a commuter but its neither one or the other so for me this meant it was good at neither.

because they stopped making 400's a while ago they are all old now which put me off a bit. i think the 400's are probably more fun but havnt tried one.

depending on your age, you might wanna think about a 600, get some insurance quotes. for me they were similar cost to insure

Yup, was the nc30 was originally designed and sold as a £6500 no expense spared rc30 equivalent. (Bear in mind, at this time a CBR600 was only £4900)

The nc30 might be older than any SV, but you can be sure it's a higher quality bike.

If you're worried about being common neither bike is particularly rare, though if you take it on the continent the nc will stand out. I've seen some Italian nutter clamber over multiple scooters to get a photo of it in Pisa.

New pointy SV's are allergic to water, NC30 would be my suggestion and you've got the commuter bike. SV is a good alrounder which you don't really need whereas the NC30 would be great for the twisties, whether they are in the UK or in the Alpes

NC30 wins hands down everytime! Take your time and pick a good one though.

Give me the SV anyday.

More modern, way more torque and far more usable.

As an SV k5 owner id say the SV.....yes you might want to mod the forks, for increase handling but it handles corners very well if you know how to ride.....as for the allergic to rain dunno what you mean...i've been riding mine all through winter and the rain too and not had any issues so you might want to disregard that remark.

PS if you have a decent set of tyres on then the rain is no worries.

A friend of mine has a black k5 (extreme3d) and he goes out on it all the time, done 6k winter miles this year and the bike is IMMACULATE. He simply keeps it clean.

or on a newer one you ride through a puddle

I am planing on geting a bike soon, and was adviced to go for an NC30 by some people, while others sugested the sv650 as it has a "torquey" engine even when restricted??

Is it true that the welds snap on them Simple Confused

I sat on an nc30 (at the dealers) and it feels well setup and good riding positon it seems, but bit pricy at £2600 for a very old bike.

Does the SV have clip-ons or huge handlebars Mad
Thanks

Errr. wtf? The SV's build quality is spot on and I've yet to read a post on sv650.org about snapping welds?

As far finish, i've seen curvys and pointys both immaculate and grotty - the difference is the quality of the owner not the quality of the bike. The same could be said for any bike.

Remember the SV is two entirely DIFFERENT bikes. You cannot compare a curvy to a pointy. Aside from looks which are subjective, the pointy has better suspension (showa's), different wheel base, fork angle, fuel injection and is at least 15mph faster with it's extra horses.

Correct me if I'm wrong but look at Andy's SV, the frame has snapped at the welds,

a few other suzukis had frame weld problems

and suzuki's welding seems still to be under pa, have oyu seen the new gsxr6's?...

I am reffering to the curvy, the pointy ones tend to direct water into their spark plug. have also known the exhausts to go a funny copper colour, not sure why but looked cack

Used to like them, but when moochign around forums etc, have generally been put off them by the odd bad thing happening with them.

Must be a good bike mind as it's used in the mini twin series of racing. Just not for me NC30 is a better bet

i think andys frame snapped due to a high speed crash

its not unusal for bikes to disintegrate when they hit things

its possible that it snapped first causing the crash but i doubt it and i dont think anyone else has said this.

The faired SV has clip-ons - the naked version just has normal handlebars.

What do you expect to happen to a bike when you crash at 120mph?

It's called tarnish, from heat, if you keep on top of polishing the exhaust it looks dead on.

If you already have a commuter and you're just after something to attack the corners, you don't have to compromise - it's got to be the NC30.
However good the SV is regardless of speed, torque, rust resiliance it's never going to be as fun as the NC30 surely.

I rode extreme2d's 05 SV an found it an excellent ride. The SV is a great bike. i'd go for that simply for the fact its a twin and has all that engine braking.

who said 120mph? I was under the impression he was going slower. however I would not expect the frame to just... snap.
