Why are some race bikes one up 5 down instead of the usual one down 5 up?

As far as I'm aware it's to do with ground clearance issues while cranked over.

E.g. your foot doesn't get caught between the tarmac and the peg when your trying to change up.

But surely then your foot would be under the peg because you need to lift up to downchange?

on moto GP i belive that they change it accordingly to the majority of the corner direction on the track

id just get confused and end up trying to go up a gear from 6th but going down 1 Surprised big boom comes from engine

But you only really need to do that when your slowing right down so you'll be near enough up right anyway.

i got mine like this & not only is that the reason but also its more natural/easier for your leg to push down on lever & when your breezing it DOES feel better to just stamp on it Very Happy + you dont accidently go into neutral as much

& i got use to it after a day or two i even went back to riding a cb250 with normal gearing during the week yet was fine going from 1 to the other

You shouldnt downshift in the middle of a corner. Back wheel will go mad and try and throw you off because of engine braking.

The ground clearance is an issue on conventional gearshift patterns mostly when accelerating out of fast left handers, Devils Elbow at Mallory is a good example of this. You don't generally change down when cranked right over, it's likely to cause you to break traction on the rear and spit you off.
