Unfortunately the battery on my GSXR600 has died over the winter - it's just not holding a charge anymore.
Rung up a few places today to get a replacement - all about £45 to £50 quid, which seems a bit steep to me - the last time i bought a car battery it was only about £25 for a bigger more powerful battery.
Anyway, what has concerned me, is that every shop has advised me to give them notice so they can charge one of the batteries ready for use, because, they say, 'these new batteries can't just be charged with a car charger, you've got to have a special charger'

Do they mean a trickle type charger?
Are they having me on?
I've only got a 'normal' car battery charger - am i fucked if my battery gets drained again?

Cheers,

Andy.

I think you need some sort of optimate charger. They cost about £40 Thumbs Up
I don't think you can use any normal charger

Oh bollox Shocked

Does this mean my 2 chargers I have are no good? I hav'nt been in the bike game for long enough to see if these are ok.

1 is a 6v/12v car/bike charger with full/trickle, the other is the tricle type I got off ebay (similar to the Lidl ones I imagine)

I heard Optimate's were good but had no idea thats all you could use Crying or Very sad

I think it depends on the type of battery, I would check with any bike shop, just incase

A trickle charger will be fine. The battery should come with instructions telling you how long to charge it before first use. They normally say to charge it at 1amp.

Are you ringing bike shops or battery shops? I found my local Honda main dealer to be no more expensive that specialist battery shops (think I paid £30 for a 9Ah maintainance free type).

Lead-acid batteries are fine to charge on amps (normal chargers)
New Silver Calcium type charge on volts and do need a different type.
Bike batteries appear to come "dry-charged" nowadays. I bought two recently and they came with acid, topped them up & fitted them, took a day for the bikes to fully charge them,

Get yourself one of these....Hawker odyssey. My bike has been off the road with the alarm on for 4 months and it started no trouble for the first time last week. Thats without using any charger of any type. My old battery wouldn't have turned the engine over after that long.
