hi all

This is my first time on here and you must forgive me if i have gone to the wrong place..

Anyhow i have a dt50 that i am doing up for my son and i have cleaned the carb flushed out the reeds flushed out the tank and put in new petrol replaced the gasket on the head and checked the piston rings........

the problem i have i when i kick it going i cant get more than 3 miles and hour out of it with full throttle

i checked the floats and the needle in the carb i am at a loss could it be in the magneto( incorrect gap)???
any help would be gratefully received

John

Have you checked the air filter? Is the fuel / air mixture set up properly?

the air filter is fine and the air screw is 1 and 3/4 turns out from tight

Do you think its sucking in to much air?

What about choke or if it is manual make sure the clutch is releasing properly. My yz had that problem, was going no where and i thought the chain was slipping but the clutch wasn't disengaging properly

3 or 30mph?

30 is about right for a old DT. 3 mph and there's something very wrong.....

if the bike is a two stroke check the exhaust and silencer they may be blocked with carbon. two strokes have a tendency of doing this.

Thanks for all the replies

1 i dont know how many miles its has on it and i checked the piston and rings and they seem to be fine

2 its a manual choke and that working ok

3 the exhaust was clean allready but i cleaned it out just in case

It was a bugger to get started in the first place and it turned out to be the cdi unit was faulty i wonder if the problem is with the magneto?

if the bike aint stalling then it is doing a fair few revs so the engine is doing its job. if you accellerate and the revs build up then its gotta do with the drive from the crank to the wheels.

sounds like a clutch issue to me if youve got revs but no drive.

failing that maybe an issue with the drive shaft and sprocket.

Could do but you might want to take precautions because the slight inscrease in power could cause extra stress to the frame due to the extra power and size.

I think.

Though the size increase isn't that big it can still have an affect as the frame in question wasn't designed for the engine you want to put into it.

The frame will be fine. If the engine design is the same size it wiil be ok otherwise you might have to make a few brackets up. Thumbs Up

Remember we recently had someone killed, which may have been because he shove a powerful lump into a 50 frame. I doubt this would produce the same effects, as it's not a massive power difference, but it's something to keep in mind anyway.

Doesn't sounds like a new engine will fix your problem anyway; I hope that's not what you're trying to solve.

thanks for all the replies

no i am not getting a new engine to fix my problem i just thought that it wouls be nice to have some more power?

I would have thought that the frame would to the stress of a bigger lump. Its only a small step up.

Indeed. This person put a 500 lump in a 50 frame.

For more power maybe an 80cc bore kit etc. or a 125?

Though I'm no expert on the matter it seems more of a sensible idea, if you can call tuning a 50 a sensible thing Razz

if youve richened the mixture right up then youve probably got an air leak......it wont run without the air filter on (just in case) or a pancake type filter without up-jetting the carb...too much air in both cases.
You could have an air leak at the reed valve/crankcase joint. Usually apply grease to the gasket there because it breaks when you remove the valve set.....was there any sign of damage to the reeds?
Is there a vac pipe off...usually one to the tank outlet to pump fuel through.
have you had the carb apart? If so have you re-fitted the needle correctly so its lifting?
